Have you given up on the dying Linux and converted to the darkside yet, /g/?

I've been running OpenBSD on a few laptops since 5.6, and am going to install it on a thin client I got from the McDonald's my dad runs as a firewall.

Shit's got a 2GB IDE SSD that draws power directly from the port, is that even a standard thing?

Mainly because Im planning to upgrade my banana pi from gentoo to freebsd, but I love my current setup though (Ive got O4 in my cflags which makes things fairly fast)

PC-BSD and GhostBSD are the "beginner friendly" bsds and both have live images, many would recommend PC-BSD over Ghost but it doesnt matter that much both are basedon freebsd but PC-BSD I believe has a bigger community

Not yet.
I'm currently using Gentoo and loving it.
Gentoo/FreeBSD seems a tad bit too experimental for me.
What BSD would be recommended for someone who like to mess around using Portage?

What filesystem does open BSD use?

Can I run it on NTFS or ext4? Can I install it with USB? Are there any beginner friendly openBSDs?
>>
>>51418228
>>51418270

Yea, OpenBSD is about as easy as installs get. Once word of advice though, don't try to install from the CD. Use it to boot, and then do http: installation. The CD installer does not verify correctly, and you have to modify it to get it to work. It's a lot easier to just install from http:. Be sure that you include the X set as part of the install, albeit it should be checked by default anyway.

Another word of advice, expect to be using the CLI a bit at first. Here's what I'd do if I were you:

1. first thing is type export PKG_PATH=http://ftp3.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/5.8/packages/amd64 (note use your architecture here, so if it's x86, use i386; Pentium 64 bit CPUs are considered AMD64.). Optionally create a folder somewhere--I usually make it it's own partition--named /pkg-cache. Then type export PKG_CACHE=/path to /pkg/cache. You'll need to either update ~/.profile to do this automatically everytime you boot, or retype this each time.

2. pkg_add nano, or whatever text editor you prefer.

3. pkg_add xfce4, or whatever you prefer. XFCE and KDE work well in OpenBSD; Gnome not so much. go ahead and add other programs you might like as well.

4. startx /usr/local/bin/xfce4

That's the quickest way to a desktop for a newbie. There is some more configuration to be done, but this will at least make you feel like you are getting somewhere almost immediately. Remember to check out the official handbook. Any question you may have is likely answered in detail. Also Absolute OpenBSD is a great book, and is more newbie friendly. These are literally the only two resources you will ever need for the most part. Good luck and enjoy.

Is OpenBSD tougher to install than Gentoo?
>>
>>51418247

Does that even do something beyond O3?
>>
>>51422165
no but the way you have to partition the hard disk is really shit tier and absolutely not noob friendly.
>>
After having display issues with literally 5 different Linux distros, I installed FreeBSD and never looked back.
>>
>>51422165
>>51422124
OpenBSD is easy as fuck to install. I don't know where this idea that it's difficult came from.

>>51422124
OpenBSD uses UFS and you can install from a USB flash drive.

The real issues with BSDs is the post-install configuration and sometimes hardware doesn't work
>>
>>51422278
Oh also I'm pretty sure it doesn't work under NTFS or Ext4. You can install it in a separate partition though.
>>
I used to run FreeBSD on my ThinkPad, but I siwtched to Linux after having issues with 3D acceleration on the i915 integrated graphics chipset. Gentoo is more BSD-ish than other distros if that counts for anything (other than Slackware which is loldeprecated).
>>
>>51422165
It's very easy, though on the first time it may seem confusing, particularly trying to manually partition your disc(s). The partitioning utility does leave a lot to be desired, but it's actually really simple once you get used to it.

The autopartion makes it easy, but you may not like the default scheme. I usually use a similar scheme, except I don't bother making /usr/obj and /usr/src separate partitions, and I add /pkg-cache. If using more than one disc I also make /altroot, and put //var and //tmp in the largest, non-ssd disc.

/pkg-cache isn't necessary, but if you ever need to reinstall everything again, it's nice to have.

/altroot is much the same. It's just a backup of / in case something goes wrong.

/usr/obj and /usr/src may be good if you compile a lot from source. Compiling from source is generally discouraged for most users though, especially newbies. Packages are kept more up to date than ports, and if you use them it's assumed that you know exactly what you are doing and won't be expecting the community to explain it or hold your hand through it.
>>
>>51422124
BSD4.2. It can mount most other common file systems though.

so OpenBSD faggots, whats it like to use an OS where you can't install anything or you'll ruin the meme security?

>>51419716
Well it supports my laptop better than Linux did last I checked, and I like how the OS runs as well as how the project is run. So regardless of whatever sort of epik maymay you claim it to be, it's been a great choice so far.

every fucking time

pie, aslr, W^X, guard pages, stack canaries, malloc protections, privsep/privdrop, separate users for daemons. every single one of these applies to base *and* packages.

libressl is used for everything in base and in packages. Miles more secure than OpenSSL, as evidenced by CVE counts: http://www.openbsd.org/papers/libtls-fsec-2015/mgp00005.html

OpenBSD actually uses the ancient Unix Fast File System.

It's old, but it works. No idea how compatible it is with other stuff overall.
>>
>>51424336
that's not how it works, you're supposed to prove your claim of installing things on openbsd compromises its security
>>
>>51425183
>>51422278
openbsd has no security. it has no jails or mandatory access control.
>>
>>51424979
Who needs jails when you have chroot and systrace.
>>
>>51425384
Now you're just getting desperate, at least it was related to the discussion in other threads.
>>
>>51425384
freebsd isn't about security either, most of their packages and ports tree isn't audited and possibly backdoored by the government
>>
>>51425384
mac is a placebo

jails can potentially be useful but they're not fine grained enough

run file(1) in a jail and it gets exploited, your whole jail is compromised. run openbsd's privsepped file(1) and the attacker can't do anything

I thought BSDs had even less software and such for them. I could understand on a server, where I don't need a whole lot of client software like I would use on my personal machines.

Gamings bad enough on Linux, why would I want to make it worse?
>>
>>51426678
Just run your gaymes in a Win7 virtual machine if you need them that badly.
>>
>>51425418
only the base system to openbsd is audited. you can run not audited software in openbsd and ruin the meme security.

Minix is a useful learning experience and gives you a different perspective on how a os should be. If you haven't tried it you should, not as your main os of course just in a vm or on a toaster.
