BSDs don't have the same level of support both with hardware and software. If you want to mess with a *nix OS on your desktop you should probably use linux.

What filesystem does open BSD use?

Can I run it on NTFS or ext4? Can I install it with USB? Are there any beginner friendly openBSDs?

Yea, OpenBSD is about as easy as installs get. Once word of advice though, don't try to install from the CD. Use it to boot, and then do http: installation. The CD installer does not verify correctly, and you have to modify it to get it to work. It's a lot easier to just install from http:. Be sure that you include the X set as part of the install, albeit it should be checked by default anyway.

Another word of advice, expect to be using the CLI a bit at first. Here's what I'd do if I were you:

1. first thing is type export PKG_PATH=http://ftp3.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/5.8/packages/amd64 (note use your architecture here, so if it's x86, use i386; Pentium 64 bit CPUs are considered AMD64.). Optionally create a folder somewhere--I usually make it it's own partition--named /pkg-cache. Then type export PKG_CACHE=/path to /pkg/cache. You'll need to either update ~/.profile to do this automatically everytime you boot, or retype this each time.

2. pkg_add nano, or whatever text editor you prefer.

3. pkg_add xfce4, or whatever you prefer. XFCE and KDE work well in OpenBSD; Gnome not so much. go ahead and add other programs you might like as well.

4. startx /usr/local/bin/xfce4

That's the quickest way to a desktop for a newbie. There is some more configuration to be done, but this will at least make you feel like you are getting somewhere almost immediately. Remember to check out the official handbook. Any question you may have is likely answered in detail. Also Absolute OpenBSD is a great book, and is more newbie friendly. These are literally the only two resources you will ever need for the most part. Good luck and enjoy.

I used to run FreeBSD on my ThinkPad, but I siwtched to Linux after having issues with 3D acceleration on the i915 integrated graphics chipset. Gentoo is more BSD-ish than other distros if that counts for anything (other than Slackware which is loldeprecated).

It's very easy, though on the first time it may seem confusing, particularly trying to manually partition your disc(s). The partitioning utility does leave a lot to be desired, but it's actually really simple once you get used to it.

The autopartion makes it easy, but you may not like the default scheme. I usually use a similar scheme, except I don't bother making /usr/obj and /usr/src separate partitions, and I add /pkg-cache. If using more than one disc I also make /altroot, and put //var and //tmp in the largest, non-ssd disc.

/pkg-cache isn't necessary, but if you ever need to reinstall everything again, it's nice to have.

/altroot is much the same. It's just a backup of / in case something goes wrong.

/usr/obj and /usr/src may be good if you compile a lot from source. Compiling from source is generally discouraged for most users though, especially newbies. Packages are kept more up to date than ports, and if you use them it's assumed that you know exactly what you are doing and won't be expecting the community to explain it or hold your hand through it.
