Around how much does it pay?
What did you have to do to get the job e.g. degrees, certification e.t.c
Also are you happy with this job?

Does Computer Science with security and forensics at a Russel group uni + a year in industry seem like a good choice. I know obviously it depends on the job I desire but would this be a good start to opening doors?

Mostly web development, thought i did build a really fucking neat rfid door system for a last job, went from never using an IC to creating a badass rfid door management system with relays maglocks and shift registers.

I currently make about 45k/year
startups can be fun, some have paid grossly high amounts and some pretty much forced me to stay awake 4 days straight on adderal pushing code to meet deadlines because lol only developer, and get paid only for half that time.

>What did you have to do to get the job e.g. degrees, certification e.t.c
Self taught, just a really nice portfolio, and the motivation to always learn more.
Dropped out of college after the 2nd year.

>where did you learn this shit
I shit you not, i wanted to be a hacker kid.
Joined hackforms, learned C# made a neat POC botnet to take commands from facebook posts (i was good friends with the guy who made the twitter botnet that symatics sperged about years ago).

Eventually made a really badass botnet POC using C++ and php (my shit was always detected, so i never sold shit, but it was an amazing learning experience)

Fell the fuck in love with PHP, developed some pretty crazy things at the age of 15, like a script to rip down CPAlead surveys, and transform them into a JSON script that i could embed into my sites, talk about fuckin conversion rates, no survey site at the time operated as smoothly as mine, this is now a built in feature of CPAlead.

I've worked for many great startups in florida including grooveshark.

I probably would not have my career if i never found hackforums.

>Also are you happy with this job?
As long as i'm working for someone who has an interesting product, and not drone client work, i'm always happy.

I'm also hoping to launch a few products of my own to see if i can not work for anyone again, i've learned a lot working with various startup business owners, more than school ever could have done.

you're welcome for the blog post
>>
>>51391340
i even at one point built an ad service for hackforums

a chunk of random bots/patchers loaded ads off basically a super shit version of google adwords that i built myself

also made a few grand during the creation of bizspark/dreamspark

between that and my CPA income

i was running game for a 15 year old

i had $500 to invest in bitcoin when it was $0.05
but instead bought a bunch of video games

the only thing i regret is spending all that money on video games and not investments in the future

fucking 15 year old mentality

Go to meetup.com and look for local tech meetups, there are always people attending who announce job openings. going to these meetups gives you excellent networking opportunities, and because you go to the meetups it shows you are active in the community. I got my job because I went to a laravel meetup, got invited to a slack group with local devs, asked if anyone had a job/internship in the chatroom. Dev tells me to come on in and well talk. 3 weeks later get internship for 15 dollars/hr after internship get hired.

There's hope anons. those meetups are honestly the key to a job/internship, I don't even have an associates degree yet.

Devops Software Engineer, 1.5yrs exp

I just automate cloud deployment stuff all day, and make tools for sysadmins that can't code.

CPAlead is a company had hosts serveys

CPA is a popular form on online minitization
Cost
Per
Action

>user wants free minecraft
>they need 1500 points
>suervey worth one point per penny i get
>they fill out only so many and get bored
>points get wipped when account goes dormant/they obviously gave up
>money in my pocket

oh fuck my CPA login is still valid
check out my pic, shits worth money
conversion rate is how many completed the survey compared to ones that viewed it

most surveys worth more than a dollar
and yes you can fill out your own surveys

give people a reason to want to fill out that survey
>points for prizes
>hide a file download
you get the idea

also get a referral and get 20% of whatever they make (and they lose nothing)
a quarter of my CPA income was from referrals

I've heard it declared many things, but I'd describe as using developer practice's to solve infrastructure level problems.
>>
>>51392886
My last year of cpa i bought my AK, and that was two days before sandy hook.

I would have no idea, but i've heard conversions are up and surveys are a lot better, along with surveys in a lot more countries.

Do the whole json api thing and make the survyes not look so "standard" and you could probably make some decent cash.

I would assume the "points 4 rewards" niche would still work granted you could build a clean site, and picked the good surveys.

surveys for porn/downloads are probably seriously washed up, might get some pretty awesome convcersions since the trend has died down and they'res new fools on the internet.

>My last year of cpa i bought my AK, and that was two days before sandy hook

it was $420 before taxes i shit you not

>>51393209
Search around and try to find a niche that isnt too flooded.

If you launch a points 4 prize site, i would recommend an initial bonus or something, to make people want to do surveys.

Stick to small prizes, and always have some giftcards up for grabs, (its against most TOS to offer direct cash/paypal prizes)

a REALLY big niche when i was doing it was movie sites, you set up a blog and post links to streamed pirated videos, my friend made a couple hundred literally off just hosting a leaked trailer for a movie, but im going to assume its died down.

The key is not to force the surveys down their face, make them feel like its their choice.

Oh raffle sites make a decent profit and tends to have good returns, simply because you're only asking for a survey or two to be entered in the drawing.
If you're only requiring one survey for a drawing, eventually you get $500 to hand out a $25 giftcard (i'd suggest also putting an entry cap so odds are known)

also if you're good at web dev, you could learn the system and sell fucking scripts/sites.

>complete turnkey CPA raffle site: $100 per download
its not as innane as it sounds, people will pay that, just don't re-make a product that exists, and always support.

I was also making side cash bug fixing someone elses survey framework because they left they scene, and others needed updates to work with a new facebook update.

>>51393414

I fucking love it. My last job was a very soulless one, with people just going in to get a paycheck and this forced sort of "corporate identity" marred by the fact that most people in the company didn't care about the product in the slightest. It pays 5k a month + I just ask when I want shit since i live with him.

To get the job I had to read 4chan and try various encrypted chat programs when they become a meme for a bit

Fuck you. I probably end up writing more unique code for our CAD software and CNC mills than you fucks do with your shitty little codemonkey jobs. Hell I had to write an OS from scratch for a SoC machine, keep it under 18kb (the entirety of the onboard memory), and still support a touchscreen.

Trade school, 2 years. Earned an associates' of science. Only sort of related are a handful of welding certs that I didn't really need but got anyway. Trade school was about 50% hands-on running the machines, 25% Python, and 25% advanced math (calc, linear algebra, trig).

CS student here. I don't have a job, but I felt it would be most appropriate to ask my question in this thread.

When pursuing internships, how important is it to work for a "big name" company? Will it matter in the long run, or do employers care more about the fact that I have experience than the company I interned at?
>>
>>51397362
Internship only works for CS if you're doing an internship in a company you want to work with, if you do it with a professor it's a waste of your time. (especially if you're doing a nonpaid one over the summer)
>>
>>51397362
>do employers care more about the fact that I have experience than the company I interned at?
In my experience, both as a job hunter and on selection committees, mostly that. The sort of company that emphasizes name recognition over experience is probably the sort of either horribly uninformed or horribly trendy place you wouldn't want to work at.
>>
I work in a think tank in NYC that get contracted by all sorts of tech companies.

It pays $64,000 a year, been there for 2 years.

Honestly it's more about enthusiasm than certs, but I personally didn't go to college and got certs instead, I've got A+, Net+ Linux+ Security+, and CCNA.

I probably wouldn't like it if I didn't do general IT work on the side. Thinktanks are cool and really great for meeting people with common interests, but if I wasn't doing hands on tech work I'd probably go insane.
>>
>>51397386
>>51397389

I got an offer for a paid internship at a bigger company, and I don't know if I want to work there in the future (they are more of a java shop and I want to pursue embedded development and low-level OS stuff), but I am just a sophomore in university, and most of the companies that came to our job fair are looking for junior-level or higher students only, and I feel pretty lucky that I landed this spot, but would working through this type of java-dev internship benefit me if I want to go into a different area of software development later down the line?

I am also trying to get a teaching assistant position at my university, for one of my CS classes. Would that look good on a resume to a hiring committee?

>>
>>51397481
Yes, take it. Any experience is better than no experience, and if you get good references out of it that'll show potential employers that you can function well in a corporate environment. When hiring, a candidate's ability to not be an autistic fuck is almost as important as actual ability.

TAing wouldn't be a bad idea, but is definitely less important than internships.

Where did you begin to learn? I've started picking up the basics from Codeacademy.org, is that really worth anything? Are there more efficient ways you would recommend.

It can actually be pretty rewarding if you enjoy/can put up with the healthcare world. Despite some insane industry changes in the past few years, the IT side seems to have evolved very, very slowly. A big part of my job has turned out to be either maintaining ancient legacy code, or working to automate things that should have been automated from the get-go.

I suppose it's kind of frightening when you think about how much personal data flows through these systems with people like me behind the wheel.

i'm making more money than 98% of people on the planet----think I'll switch onto something else.

Listen, you little prick, some of us, namely me, lives in a shitty third world country and makes little over 5 bucks an hour. A major gaggly fuck to be sure but all went down thanks to or in part of or due to the many unwielding circumstances all up to and including an evaporation of my previous lucrative job thanks to the fuck all the post housing bubble cluster fuck gave birth to. So some of us are literally bottom feeders. Trying to get in the tech game, I am but failing miserably because writing C code is so fucking boring, but i'm getting thank God, slowly! tried Java wasn't sure what the fuck was going on, Got confused, then went back to C's familiarity. Will keep tugging with C.

But yo, you're making more than I'd make if i worked my present job for 12 years on---in one fucking year.

buck the fuck up and be thankful, you ungrateful cretin.

truthfully i'm not. not as hard as i could be. i'm a bit of an old shoe when it comes to learning things.

hire me as a touch up worker and have me look for one error in a billion lines of code and i'll do it. the longer i do it the more familiar the code comes to me and the better i am at sitting down for hours on end in front of endless ocean of code.

however, ask me about the housing bubble or the way the treasury and the fed cluster fuck Americans, and anything just about, about world war 2, and i could spend hours and hours reading, and writing and thinking. ask me about theoretical physics and you and i can go on all day about it....ask me about C, and there's maybe one thing i can recall about learning.

it's how i learn, if i'm working for you, and you put me in front of a computer and give me a list of things to change in a million lines of code, I promise you, I'd not only dedicate myself to changing it but i'd spend hours and hours and hours understanding the hows and whys. data entry and databases was a part of my former job which i did, and did well.

>What tech related job do you do?
Not really tech related, but unlike 80% of people on /g/. I do have a job.
I'm a Manager's Assistant in an off-track betting shop.

>Around how much does it pay?
On my contract (25 hours), £7.80/hour, £702/month, after taxes, before overtime.

>What did you have to do to get the job e.g. degrees, certification e.t.c
Be able to count to ten. And Smile when serving customers.

>Also are you happy with this job?
I'm in the dry, there's air conditioning, the work is easy, and the customers are a laugh to chat with. Bretty gud.

I'm an embedded systems programming intern. Then I do contract work as a web developer on the side.
>Around how much does it pay?
Intern: 17 bucks an hour. Contract work: can range from 20-40 dollars an hour.
>What did you have to do to get the job e.g. degrees, certification e.t.c
No degrees or certs. For the contract work, nobody asks about college degree. It's just about experience and attitude. For the internship, a hackathon teammate recommended me for it.
>Also are you happy with this job?
Very much so. I'm just starting out and can't afford a degree, so this lets me build my skills/experience in two fun and lucrative directions.

Basically I fix shit and administrate a Windows network for a non-profit organisation.

£6.50/hour

Mediocre, but I enjoy it and it is my first IT job.

In last year of HND Computing after doing a Level 3 in the same. Looking to top up next year in Security or Software Engineering.

Built a database for another local charity before as well, which helped get me this job (I've been cleaning up their clusterfuck of a CRM database).

He's either coding for Windows 95 or some other ancient artifact. C++ has been used for just about everything for the past 15 years. The reason for the shit pay is literally no one needs a dedicated c coder anymore.

Btw raw c isn't object-oriented, that's why java makes no sense.

>Around how much does it pay?
20/hr. i usually work 20 hrs a week, but i could easily work 100.

>What did you have to do to get the job e.g. degrees, certification e.t.c
gave them my resume and letters of rec from previous jobs showing them i was a hard worker. i offered them 2 days as an unpaid intern to show them i was capable. i have a GED and no certs. they hired me 3 hours into the first day starting @ $16.5/hr

>Also are you happy with this job?
i work from home (sometimes in my underwear). i get to write and deploy scripts on thousands of computers. i work with windows, linux and OSX in both servers and workstations, my boss and coworkers are super nice and bought me beer as a gift for my birthday, i get to keep hardware that our clients are throwing away (ive accumulated 1000s of dollars worth of hardware). so yeah, this is cool but not what i want to do for the rest of my life. i want to get into a physical job that involves being outside.

ask me anything.

In-house Systems Analyst

Started at 60K, now at 69K a year later, will probably break 70K with yearly raise. This is in the DFW area so low cost of living.

Degree in MIS and logistics, good interviewing skills, said on my resume I'd taken a class in SAP.

It's decent. Some days it's boring as fuck, other days it's stressful, but it's usually quite manageable. It satisfies my autistic need to learn a lot of esoteric shit about business processes and how to relate them to ERP system processes. The pay is decent, the pay-to-sweat ratio is great, and the job market seems good too. I could just stay in-house and have a very easy life, or I could go into consulting and make a shitload of money but also work long hours and travel a lot. We'll see.

"Right" is an adjective, and as such, cannot modify a verb such as "speak". Such an instance requires the use of an adverb. I believe the phrase you are looking for is "speak correctly".
