At night, do you let your computer sleep, hibernate, hybrid sleep or shut down?
>>
>>50789288

Shut down, boot is so fast with an SSD anyway
>>
>>50789288

With my Mac I put it to sleep, as close the lid = sleep mode, and it's fine.

My PC I shut down, as the power light flashing is obnoxious and it keeps the fans on during sleep mode.

I usually just close the lid of my macbook, so it's on standby all the time. Rarely shut it down. Pic related, not supposed to be an impressive uptime, but it's probably what it's usually like.

Since replacing my motherboard I've started using hibernate instead of sleep as the new board doesn't have an S3 power state option so putting it to sleep keeps power going to the fans. I thought it would be terrible but it doesn't take very long to turn off (30 seconds maybe, even though I'm always using 10GB+ of memory) and waking up isn't significantly longer.

Really I don't see much reason to do a full shutdown, maybe if you're one of those people that only uses the computer just for browsing the internet and only one tab at a time and you're really stingy with your electricity bill.

>>50789306
Check your BIOS for the S3 power state, it's usually under an ACPI section.

Or, at least, try not to shut it down as much.
>>
>>50789757

i demand instant gratification, those boot times simply don't cut it for me
>>
>>50789989
The point if sleep/hibernate is it lets you start where you left off, with all your programs and services running. Even with an SSD you've got to wait for all that stuff to load, and then if you have a browser with a significant amount of tabs open you've got to wait for all those to load as well (and videos to rebuffer, dead threads 404, still active threads start off from the top instead of the last viewed post, etc.).

Once you factor in all that you're no longer comparing 20 second to 40 second boot times, you're comparing a 10 second wake time to a multiple minute boot and load time even with an SSD.

>>
>>50789518

Sleep in Mac OS is actually useful. Computer goes completely silent and only draws a few watts of power, but when you hit a button, it pops back to life instantly. Windows has hibernate, but that takes almost as long as a cold boot, and sleep in windows is worthless like that guy said. At least my computer at work keeps the fans running, the power light blinks on and off, and the monitors go dark.
>>
>>50790397
Meanwhile in the real world
>SSDs die after less than a year of serious use (i.e. anything more than muh gaems)
>SSDs are pretty much as flimsy as cheap glass
>SSDs are faster
>SSDs use less power
>SSD capacity has hit a cap and isn't even 10% of HDD levels
>SSDs cost 10-50x as much as HDDs
>>
>>50790468
That guy's sleep isn't functioning correctly, if he sets the correct power state in the BIOS it'll work the same as a Mac.

Hibernate, whilst taking longer than sleeping, has the advantage over a cold boot of saving everything that's in memory like sleeping. The advantages it has over sleeping are less power usage (sleep is minimal though) and the power light doesn't keep flashing (pretty sure that can be turned off when sleeping).
>>
>>50789863
and how long does it take for this to be noticeable?

>>
Leave it on, shut it down as needed to install updates or for extended absences.

Sleep does nothing on a windows box so far as I can tell and my computer idles at like 4watts. Not missing that $3/yr.

Haven't used hibernation in a long time -- boards that don't have problems with it still need to offload RAM into NV memory I think (usually the harddrive) and since I have 24gb of that, it can take a while. Longer than reboot takes on a SSD anyways.

I do that already. However I typically have around 50 tabs open, some of which are videos that would need to buffer again and some pages with autoplay elements that would have to be stopped each time.

It doesn't take long to boot at all. The thing is my computer doesn't just sit at the desktop all day. To get to it's current start from a cold boot would probably take 3 or 4 minutes and be a huge inconvenience. For that reason hibernating or sleeping has a huge advantage for me and no real disadvantage, so to shut down my computer at the end of each day would be illogical and stupid.

i have a kingston 128. it's got a metal body and i've dropped it on the floor and ran it grounded to another metal surface while being held up diagonally and skewed by nothing but the SATA and power cable.

i've had it for over a year and it's been just as speedy as day one.

i've only ever had the OS+Drivers installed on it, however.

Sleep/hibernate is pretty much the only reason most non-windows users even need /swap anymore. This should tell you why using them is a bad idea, especially if your /swap is located on an SSD.

No one cares. You've literally traded ports and packages for the faggoty App Store. Unlike Ports and Packages, common to the BSD world, with App Store zero fucks are given about quality, or security, so long as there's money to be made off of selling dipshits bullshit.

I run Arch and I usually just suspend by closing the lid.

But sometimes, when I open it up it won't resume and it will just give me that fucking cursor in the top left corner. Nothing works from then on, shift+alt+f1 takes me to login and then it freezes so I have to restart. This is like once every few days.
