Just pulled this out of dad's storage and plugged he cables in. What do /g/uys?
Inb4 messy desk, install gentoo etc
You mean this one, in perfect condition with the badge and ball? Nada, sorry man. Are you a collector?
Look out mother fuckers! This bitch has a Motorola 68040 pushing 25 Mhz.
Comes with 4, you read that right 4 COLORS!
All kidding aside it does have a modem, I DEMAND YOU GET ON THE INTERNET AND SHOW US WHAT /g/ looks like!
It is monochrome I think
Resistors. I should maybe install them
Must have had an external hooked up before. I'm looking where the packs go now. No worries. I am a professional. ;)
1000 dollars is a few car payments.
If you make 1000 dollars in a regular work week you would be making over 200 dollars a day.
Sorry my description doesn't meet your high standards. Shine your shoes for you?
Why not leave NeXTSTEP on there? I think there's an emulator for it too somewhere.
I would get it running and play Doom on it, since NeXT computers were used to make a lot of the assets and code for the game.
There are people in this thread *on this board* that make less than $1000 a week?? I make $35/hr and I'm just an intern lel. Still in college. And none of the people that work around me have CS degrees; they're just nerds.
That's only like, $25 an hour.
$15 is pretty damn standard for your run of the mill everyday warehouse employee.
Any truck driver with a CDL STARTS at about 25
Please go to school before you become one of those, I dropped out of highschool so minimum wage should be $15 an hour because I don't think I get paid enough to flip patties.
It's stuck in single user mode after a soft restart. Guess I'll have to do it the *hard* way
How much is this worth? Not OP, btw.
KolibriOS is written in FASM, which is for x86 & x86_64. The NextStation uses a Motorola 68040, so KolibriOS will not run on it.
Did your dad work for ID, or did he just find a shareware floppy in a shitty gaming magazine 20 years ago?
A computer repair shop with ~40,000 square feet of computer and electronic parts and junk ranging from 1921 to present.
We have an osborne enterprise if that means anything to you.
>all these anons telling OP to wipe a functional NeXTSTEP install and turn it into just another Linux box
yep. Just a little background info.
We have our main section where we do normal repairs and sell modern parts. We have an overstock section adjacent which, as its name inplies is overstocked with a million cards and motherboards and hard drives and such.
We have a seperate Audio and Video isle for all a/v equipment.
We have an A warehouse which houses our printers, desktops/monitors, Apple isle (from the original Apple II to the Mac G5 and above) and network isle.
Then we have B warehouse which houses our lab and test equipment as well as al computer components like resistors, caps, plugs, etc.
Then there is C warehouse which is literally just parts of oooolllld metal shit.
We also have a back yard called the B bay because you have to go through B warehouse to get to it. It's a graveyard of mounds and mounds of copper scrap, PSU's, HDD's, Motherboards, and some Cars and Vans.
So yeah. That's basically it.
Oh we also have Two Ebay rooms for ebay selling.
Sounds pretty sick! I've been to a place like that in San Jose.
Warehouse type electronics stores are the best. I get lost for hours poking around and finding cool stuff.
Think I figured it out. This is more awkward than the windows registry.
Not able to change the host name or ip. Text boxes are not even editable
25yo and already had a GUI and a web browser. that's pretty neat !
>browsing the web on the same kind of machine Tim Berners-Lee created the WWW...
I think I've got it! The GUI tools seems pretty useless. Editing /etc/hostconfig is easy. Using vi from the 80's isn't though, so pico it is.
I'm beginning to think this computer was botched from the start. Why is ping in /etc?
now, make it your main machine for a week and post in the retro thread!
Oops. It makes sends why it was using an external drive before.
FYI those tar gzips labeled NIHS contain fat binaries for the NeXT (68k), Intel, RISC and SPARC platforms and take up a lot of space. You could delete them if you find them here http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Software/ (or just Google the filenames) and download the N-only packages (if you ever get a working browser)
This thing is a beast. Swapping a full disk and it just takes it. Very stable. I just deleted the doom1 wad though. I've now got 12mb free space.
Really? It converts HTML it to RTF and renders that?
Amiga is for babbys
Nobody at CERN had an Amiga except the researcher's children, everyone at CERN had NeXT workstations.
Also if Steve Jobs ever learned one thing was optimization.
Not same guy but it could be argued that posting "what you dislike" in a thread is implying that people should stop using that word/term
and also adds nothing to the discussion at hand
Yeah this needs at least 16mb ram. It is a little slow, but not annoying. This browser though is awful.
OH MY GOD!
This thread needs to be archived
It does not imply anything.
I tend to chill out and try to have fun and relaxed conversation over here and not to be strictly structured in thread topics, as I hope everyone else does.
Op here. Thank you everyone again for hanging out. I know it's late. It's been fun getting this old computer going with your support. It's difficult to quote using my phone, but I would be doing more if I could.
I'm going to try posting in this thread from the nextstation next.
Probably not but can it take screenshots, some screens from a native next box would be awesome, other than that, im amazed thaT it still operates today, speaks volumes about the long term viability of ip and http
No problem man. I was just saying because I thought CAPTCHA needed that stuff. Best thread in years really! I dont remember the last time I got hooked up to a thread on 4chan like in this one...
sum1 git dis nigga a pass, stat.
>poorfag here or I would
I never set it. The battery must still be working. The RTC seems to have lost time though.
Didn't an anon say something about y2k issues? How can I get the right time on this thing? Oh well.
Setting my clock back let's me run netsurfer. Let's see if it works.
I was comparing them in the interpreted languages field only.
Hehe, no. The nextstation swallowed the disk. It just works!
This browser is so slow!!! I remember Netscape on an old 486 that was much snappier than this. Of course, the comparison isn't fair, but this is kinda crazy. It's been nearly 10 minutes formatting the page.
Alright guys it was fun, but I've got to sleep now! I'll be back with more stuff tomorrow
