Is there any up-to-date phone similar to this? I really want a phone which is as open source and with a physical qwerty keyboard.

I'd buy one but the price is way too high

Not that I know of, sorry.

Hardware keyboards died, sadly. Don't let the neo900 convince you, it's got meh-tier specs (whereas you could just get an N97, N97 Mini or N900) and costs the same as a flagship.

Why the fuck are there no phones with physical keyboards anymore?
>>
>>42984240
N97 (mini) phones are not really open source. The Neo900 is the best around

>>42984187
This phone was never intended to be out in the public. There were only a few hundred of these phones that were made and they were given to developers who wrote software for the N9 phone.
>>
>>42984505

The N900 can be, I think. Except you have to deal with temperamental batteries (hurr turn phone on to charge), weak MicroUSB ports (can be fixed), and just deprecation in general.

You won't find anything modern with this.

As far as open source goes, just find a model that is supported by cyanogenmod, which is FOSS.

I think it's ultimately this. Everybody's feeling the pressure to compete with Apple these days in slimness.

>Everybody's feeling the pressure to compete with Apple these days in slimness.
The market has spoken and we have decided that we wanted thin phones that don't have bulky keyboards. If you want to speak to the marketplace, put your money where your mouth is and starting paying premium prices for phones with keyboards.

Because touchscreens are better now and keyboards apps like swype make typing faster on the touchscreen.

Also have you owned a phone with a physical keyboard? On the G1 (HTC Dream) it was kind of a pain to pull out and use, so I really only did it when typing long paragraphs.

For example this post would have just been made on the (crappy) touchscreen.

Buy old phones with outdated hardware at premium prices. That's the only way you can send a strong message to the manufacturers. However, your individual act might not be strong enough for them, it's up to us to continue making these purchases over the long run.

>keyboards apps like swype make typing faster on the touchscreen.

This is what /g/ has told me everytime I've bitched about this.

Holy shit are these apps atrocious. I've been using the Android Keyboard for about two months now and it is the worst piece of shit ever. Scratch that, Swype was. With Swype I'd trace out a word, and it will suggest words that aren't even close to anything I traced. And when I'd manually type them in, it would autocorrect to something absurd. I switched over to Android/Google whatever and that fixed most of my issues with strange words... but I still have to change one or two words a message that make absolutely no sense. Also, if your word has less than five letters, good luck, might as well just type it in because the keyboard will never get the right one.

Worse part is I have to sit there and stare at the screen like a knob to make sure 1) the word I trace is the word I actually want it to put in and 2) because there is 0 tactile response by design, I have to watch to make sure I'm tracing the word properly. It kills my ability to multitask.

Children and hip 20 somethings are ruining the cellphone industry by shifting the focus to aesthetics rather than hardware features.

It's Handspring, not Palm. Handspring was bought by Palm, eventually. Too bad that the Springboard modules never really took off, oddly though you can fit a PCMCIA card in the Springboard expansion slot since it's the same dimensions and pin count. It won't work, of course. The PalmOne Treo 600 actually still has Handspring markings on the motherboard inside.

I feel your pain OP. I can't bear the thought of having to use a phone without a physical QWERTY. It's just so much faster for me.

I use an old cheap samsung, pic related. it was 40 bucks for a refurb & I use AT&T prepaid, cause I'm a poorfag.

If you can deal with the shortcomings, it's not too bad. First, there seems to be no way to root last time I checked. So it's stuck on Gingerbread and only has half a gig of RAM and kinda shit resolution . But if you can deal with that, it's a decent 800Mhz dualcore with microSD slot, HSPDA 3G, wifi, and all the standard smartphone shit. For a poorfag like me it's not too terrible, and as mentioned I really like having a physical keyboard. In my experience, they tend to lag a lot less, for one thing.
I pay 40 bucks a month for 500 minutes, unlimited texts, and a paltry half gig data plan. But I use Opera mobile, which uses their servers to do compression & reduce data use by almost 90%. I've never run out, and often have half of that 500 megs left at the end of the monthy billing. Of course, I can't use youtube or pandora or anything like that unless I'm on wifi, but I can do that at home and at work, so in my case that half gig of data is actually more than enough. I'm happy with my phone & plan anyway, and isn't that what matters? Pretty sure Tmobile couldn't give me a better deal. AT&T's prepaid really is the best, even if they are admittedly a shitty company overall.

Give the people what they want. It's obvious that there are many people who would make use of it.

Good for SNES games. Sucks that the SD cart slot is located behind the battery.

I'll probably start using a 'passed-down' iPhone 5 later in the year if a new QWERTY doesn't pop up

In Australia that was called the HipTop, the only Sidekick to make it to this country.
It didn't get here until people started importing the older Sidekicks though.

Sidekick 4G

Nice keyboard, shit everything else.
Personally I love it.
>>
All integrated physical keyboards on handheld devices are inadequate. That Hacker Keyboard app is the best Android solution I've found for being able to do terminal shit on a phone.

Don't get your hopes up too high. They're still not sure if the Wi-Fi is completely free and there is definitely no free GPU driver.

>>42985794
seems retarded to pay that much for a dumbphone when you have phones like the moto g for marginally more

I'd rather just pay $20 for some cheap burn phone that'll work just as fast with the same battery life

the advantage of smartphones is that you can do a lot more than just text and call with them

getting an expensive dumbphone just screams hipster to me

While all the answers you've received are valid to a point, I'm still surprised that there's nothing. Kinda seems to me like the big businesses are "leaving customers on the table", if you know what I mean.

>I can go 80wpm on a touchscreen
As someone who can go 147wpm on my mechanical keyboard, and uses a Galaxy S3 on a daily basis, I highly doubt you can actually type anywhere near that fast on a touchscreen.
>>
>>42990485
Retarded, but it has the world record for mobile typing speeds. It is objectively the best/fastest way to type on a phone.
>>
>>42993809
Yeah he's bullshitting. The world record for mobile typing is about 50WPM and was done with Swype.
>>
>>42985859
But they are already ultra durable due form factor.
They are technically humidity proof due form factor.
Same with crush.
Cum needs zalo or real dishing solutions.

At worst you might want to buy a film to put over the screen to avoid scratching, and cleaning it properly between films.

>>42985794
Sounds neat.
