I'd suggest to do a lot of warm ups and maybe some stretching? If you can work your way to doing this exercise, you'll love it. If you want alternatives I usually stick with cable rows.

I like dumbbell rows and t-bar rows. It's all preference though. What matters for rows is that you treat every rep the same no matter the weight.
