What would be the downsides of just doing p90x and insanity for a couple years, with maybe some basic barbell lifts for strength?

If your goal is to have a healthy cardio system and well rounded like a military soldier then by all means do it. For the typical bulky bodybuilder its utter shit.

Alright, that's what my goal is for now. Might replace the insanity with something else eventually to spare my joints though

Yea shit is ruff compared to P90x on them. I did all of x3 but bailed a few weeks in on Insanity because of it.
If you need something to fill that void then swim, jump rope, or learn HIT tactics.
