What is /fast/?
Fast is a thread for the discussion of intermittent fasting, fasting, water fasting, and fat fasting

Day 5 of water fast. Feeling great.

Can I bike on stationary bike every day? Otherwise I sit all day on my ass at work.
>>
Quick talk on ECA stack while fasting:

Anyone do this? What were your results?
>>
I'm cutting and have started 16:8 IF. Should I eat more or keep my goal at 1800 calories/day?
>>
>>42857637
I'd assume a stationary bike would be fine. I've been trying to either swim/run while fasted. I'm doing a 20:4 but I'm finishing day 4 now and I'm feeling good.
>>
>>42857664
With IF the goal should be to continue your regular maintenance TDEE, maybe just a 100 calories less. Don't reduce CI per day and fast at the same time
>>
>>42857703
I've plateaued with my weight loss and took up IF to try power through it. I feel it'll get harder if I go back to maintenance
>>
>>42857719
Aight well be careful about getting your micro nutrients
>>
>>42857477
anyone else get these weird shivers when fasting?
>>
>>42857779
Yes, especially at the start of it
>>
>>42857477
I fast like 7 hours a night. Unless I wake up during it. That is a long fucking time to go without sugar.

Sugar is life, sugar is love.
>>
I'm trying to start a 16/8 fasting cycle every day but I'm having an issue because, at my work, my lunch is at 11:00, and I only get an hour.

Most days I don't get to eat dinner until 7:00-7:30 and fasting begins after that.

My question is: does fasting cycles have to be even numbers? (sounds fucking dumb I know) but my cycle would be more like 15/9, just wondering if it matters.
>>
>>42858498
>7 hours is not fasting
>spoken like a true addict
>probably obese
>enjoy your insulin resistance

Well meme'd sir! I tip my fedora to you
>>
>>42858846

if you're still eating two meals a day your fast isn't really going to be as effective. you're essentially just skipping breakfast.

i recommend skipping lunch at work and doing a 20/4 cycle
>>
>>42858846
The more the merrier but still better than nothing and/or eating the cereal jew every morning
>>
>>42859001
I tried a 20/4 and I found it incredibly difficult to fit my maintenance calories into dinner. Like I just couldn't eat that much. Got any tips besides make more calorie dense food?
>>
>>42859001

>not stuffing your face in just one hour and calling it a day

If I was gonna do a 23/1 I would rather just fast the whole weekend and say fuck it.

Can you people not start threads for me? There is a method to my madness

also

>xray for chest pain at doc
>nothing on spine or in tissue
>do have tiny calcified pulmonary nodule in lung
>every website says I'm either gonna die or need to shell out 6k for CT scans for a year; even though chiro said it ain't shit and not to worry

I do hope OMAD encourages enough autophagy to clear it out or stop it if it's bad, time to chug coffee for them auto-gainz
>>
>>42859028

Here's what I do

>Feeding window starts at 6
>6PM, eat snack
>7PM, eat dinner
>8PM eat snack
>9 PM, eat smoothie

2 250 calorie snacks, 500 calorie dinner, and a 400 calorie smoothie puts me at 1,400 cals for the day.

Just add more/less to the smoothie depending on what your goal is.
>>
>>42859056
Hmm, I feel like I could probably do that. I can easily get a few tablespoons of peanut butter in there too. To make up for the difference.

That's a pretty hefty cut (assuming your maintenance is around mine) That would be a 750 cut for me. I know that's safe normally, but is that fine with IF?
>>
>>42859087

Considering there are people who do 7 day water fasts in this thread, yeah, it's fine with IF.

I have an in-and-out mentality with this anyway. Once I hit my goal weight I'm stopping. I'm relatively new to lifting so I'm not too worried about losing muscle but I've found my lifts have even been slightly increasing since I started IF. Go figure.
>>
>>42859118
Thanks for the help anon! I think I'm gonna try 20/4 for a few weeks and see how I like it.
>>
>>42859148

It takes some adjustment but once you get used to it, it's really not bad at all. I drink a lot of tea and coffee to curb hunger pangs whenever I'm feeling them and it works like a charm.

Plus it makes eating dinner so fucking good.

Can someone seriously explain something.

So I fasted for 2-3 days then went ketogenic for 2 days then went high carb for a day.

I repeated this pattern for about 3 weeks.

After the carb day I felt like I hit 15 pounds of cocaine ran around my house then went to sleep.

I was also extremely productive and dug a ditch in my yard and built shit all over the place.

I am curious if there was a scientific test that studied the effects of performance and this pattern in sports that could confirm I was not experiencing some type of placebo effect or something.

Been doing 16/8 for awhile. Haven't been able to lift for a couple months because injury. I'm eating at maintenance, and I feel like I'm "uncomping", i.e. My weight is holding steady but I'm starting to get flabbier, I think.

What do?
>>
>>42859774
There has to be more to it then that realistically because I have been put in positions of very low food and did not experience the same sort of boost.

Big fan of IF fat fasting (I use a bit of ghee) for fat loss and alertness during the day, especially for an office job. I mean why have breakfast and lunch and then just sit on your ass and let it convert to fat? Ugh.

Question: what do you guys think about chewing gum while fasting, is this halal? I'd like to go through a few pieces during fasting periods, but they seem to have 5 calories per stick (1-2g of sugar). How much will this fuck with my insulin?
>>
>>42859910
It's worth a shot. If you're trying to work out but it's not fixing what feels wrong, you're probably just gay.

Don't do it if you can't do it well. Soon you'll be eating all kinds of junk just to meet your caloric need. Do 20/4 4 times a week and 18/6 or 16/8 or something the other days so you can eat more while still eating healthy foods.
>>
>>42859801

Sounds like maybe you should shorten the window more to eat less. It makes sense to let yourself lose a bit of weight if you're not lifting, otherwise what do you expect? Of course you're gonna gain fat if you hold bodyweight constant.

Clean up food quality too. It sucks not being able to lift, I know. What kind of injury though? If you're not bed-ridden, maybe you could do light cardio to keep your metabolism up. Even a good walk on a fasted stomach helps.

Medfag here, i don't know how old you are but the likelihood is you don't have cancer if you're a young non-smoker. Dunno what the US guidelines are but in the UK you'd get a CT scan every year, no growth after two years and they'd discharge you from follow up. Don't get a shit ton of CTs, it's approaching fukashima levels of radiation.

Does it matter what you break your fast with? Could I just eat shit?
>>
>>42862241
Depends on the fast and duration. If you are going longer than 2-3 days, it would be recommended to do a refeed when getting off your fast. Refeed syndrome can potentially kill you, so look up refeeding if you are doing something long-term.

>>42862296

Is diet pepsi okay for fasts?
>>

>>
>>42862653
Some would say no, as your body cant tell the difference between a sweet sugary substance, or a sweet 0 calorie substance and will spike insulin in response to what it expects to be a very sweet intake.

I would also say no. Not only because the first reason, but because I always end up becoming hungry and really wanting food if I go for a diet beverage. I thought I was being clever drinking a ton of diet A&W when cutting, but I quickly realized all it did was make me want more sweets and bullshit food.

Ultimately, if you can do it without it fucking your world up, then go ahead. I cannot.
>>
>>42862975

>Some would say no, as your body cant tell the difference between a sweet sugary substance, or a sweet 0 calorie substance and will spike insulin in response to what it expects to be a very sweet intake.

This seems like broscience to me. The insulin spike is a biological response to caloric intake. Just because something tastes sweet IE artificial sweetener does not mean that the body assumes you are ingesting calories.
>>
>>42863009
Ya, I wasnt too keen on that one either. Which is why I said the second reason is the reason I avoid diet drinks.
>>
>>42863009
Well check the insulin response on different sweeteners. As far as I know very few sweeteners do not cause an insulin reaction.

>The insulin spike is a biological response to caloric intake

Not quite, Insulin is a response to carbohydrates. Fats do not trigger an insulin response. Would be really stupid if you were eating some blocks of butter and you would pass out due to hypoglycemia.
>>
>>42857477

Okay, so summer is around the corner in my country and i'm around 8 pounds overweight, i've been considering water fasting for around a week
Any recommendations before i start this?
I have only done intermitent fasting before

>>
>>42879124
Just stop eating. You will easily lost that and more in a week. You dont need any supplements because 7 days is a short fast. I would just make my last meal something fibrous so that you are not constipated.
>>
>>42878467
so past 33 days starvation mode kicks in?
>>
>>42877774
he probably means bonebroths which I believe people eat on fasts, or at least on keto.
>>
>>42879279
no what makes you think that? Starvation happens when body no longer has fat to burn so its individual. One guy fasted for over a year
>>
>>42879299
it still has calories. It you eat that its not real fast
>>
>>42879165
In the southern emisphere, summer actually starts 21st december
Sadly, as i live in one of the hottest cities, we have 34 degrees temperatures starting in october usually, and when summer actually starts it can get really nasty, some people literally dies of heat attacks, also humidity makes thermal sensation rise a lot, we peaked at 60°C thermal sensation last year (wich is around 45 actual degrees). So summer time here is actually spring because in actual summer most people don't wanna leave their houses or goes on vacation to someplace colder
>>42879240
Thanks for usefull advice bro
>>
>>42879311
how many calories can a bone broth really have? google says 10 per cube whatever the fuck that means

coffee also has a few calories too (like 3) so you fags arent really fasting if you sip coffee
>>
>>42879440
also read it has electrolytes so I dont think it'd really hurt your fast
>>
>>42857477
On the larger topic of fasting, isnt it quite a peculiar thing? Why do so many religions have it? Why do people who focus on health do it outside of religions?

Is it something of a sacred thing? I have been thinking about it from a bio evolutionary principle as to why it may be useful in spiritual ways, alike to that of religion.

Imagine that in our brain we have repositories, math principles and databases that loosely detail many aspects around us, from safety, to weather, too wealth...and food access of course. Now if you have a lot of wealth, if you have a lot of access to food, then those math scrips will tell you "Shit faggot, we are running out of food, stop doing everything else and fix it".

And in this modern age that "everything else" is hedonism, its partying, its drinking, its being some slut using faggotmongler. Now if these events were limited to themselves it wouldnt be that horrible...but obviously they arent. That little math script in your brain will tell many things in your life to stagnate. If there is no need for fresh kill to get, then your brain goes off "predatory mode" and suddenly you are a bit less capable at work, less capable at life. Eventually these things may add up and then a child who grows up with these math principles never learns anything on how to live, and they just waste away.

So in a way, fasting may trigger many of the underlying mental math repositories that will prompt higher performance in you. But obviously, the more potent thing is to find the mid range of your brain, the subtle part where your consciousness starts to end, and where those repositories begin. Actually cutting off your money supply and sending you into a panick of how and where you may be able to eat is even more potent.

It is a very similar approach in the way that the Spaniards burned their vessels when they arrived into america, to kill the natives in a huge successful storm. (because they had nothing else to go back to). Opinions?

Been fasting from 1/2pm to 7/8pm for just under a week now and lost 3 pounds. I was 152 pounds but am now 149, is that a healthy loss in a week or am I losing it at a rate that will eat away muscle?

I've lost a lot of weight with IF and clean eating. I've noticed I sleep a lot less. Like 4hrs tops at night then maybe an afternoon cat nap of about an hour.

Is there a link between fasting and sleep patterns?
>>
>>42882222
>Is there a link between fasting and sleep patterns?
Yes. I've heard other people say basically the same thing as you. I've been doing IF for 6 months and unfortunately it hasn't happened to me. The only thing it changed is that sometimes I'll fall asleep around 8-9pm, wake up at midnight, spend the entire night awake, and then sleep the other half during the morning.

I've been doing 20 4 IF for the past 3 months, but after I took a break, it was hard to start again. I've finally started again now. I'm planning to do two extended fasts--one for 2 weeks after Canadian Thanksgiving, and another for 5 weeks after Halloween. Should I really start taking tons of potassium and magnesium or is that retarded?

Longest I've fasted before is 90 hours.
>>
>>42884243
You should get your potassium and magnesium no matter what kind of diet or fast you are doing. You don't need "tons" of it. Some multivitamins have either of both of these, another one is mineral salt.
>>
So I want to do the obvious, lose fat/gain muscle, but how does that work into a fast especially when I should be getting anywhere from 120g-180g protons for my lifting?

I've been trying to do fullbody 3x a week, if I just went on a little 3 day fast every other weekend would that be bueno? or is there some synergy I'm missing?

>>
>>42885451
desu I did 14 days and the refeeding is a pain in the ass. For me there are two options that make sense.

>OMAD, in a low carb manner
>eat on lift days, fast on rest days
>>
>>42885483
I want to do a prolonged fast to experience it and also cut down. I won't be lifting or doing a ton of exercise. Mostly going to be doing 60 days of no fap, rebuilding my engine and wiring harness on my Rx7, and fasting until Christmas season.
>>
I'm now 8 days in. No supplements, just water. I've done 6 days a few times, it was perfectly fine. But since yesterday, at the 7 day mark, I get these weird body aches and these migraines that won't go away. I also feel queasy like I'm going to have diarrhea in 20 minute, or puke in 5 minutes, but nothing ever comes. Should I brute force some light cardio or something? It seems weird that a fast just two days longer than last time is this painful. I really feel like utter fucking shit. I have to finish an assignment in about 24 hours and I don't think it's doable in this state, my brain is barely working. As far as I know, nobody has mentioned a sharp increase in difficulty on the 7th day.

Some people have gone longer with just water, so I don't think it's inherently the worst thing in the world. Are supplements really that necessary? I've never taken them on the 6 day fasts.

Is there kind of a "pick me up" to get me out of this but light enough to still be fasting?

>>

Yeah, I guess you're right. I'll just cook some mixed vegetables and eat them with a spoon so that it's nothing too crazy. I'm just a bit weary of food because, for the last year and a half, if I ever eat, I really over eat and stuff myself, no matter what it is, which is why I was pushing 300 pounds 6 months ago.

It feels safer to starve, if that makes sense. I don't mean to turn this into my blog, but it's nice to say (or type) out loud.

>>42886208
Maybe that's true, but it was 2 very down days in a row. It's hard to put into words, it wasn't a specific pain like one of my arms hurting, it was a general feeling of slowly dying.

I ended up eating anyways, about 300 calories worth of mixed vegetables, felt like a million (canadian) bucks afterwards. Now it's the next morning and I feel perfectly fine, like I've been eating regularly for the past week. All of the pain and malaise is gone.

Maybe I just have to edge up 1 day at a time, so that each successive fast is n+1 days, and maybe next time I should take supplements. But now at least I can work and be on my feet for more than 10 minutes at a time.

For the record, I had no stomach trouble, even after breaking the 8 day fast. Maybe refeeding syndrome isn't as severe as people think, I don't know.

salad with chicken or fish

Oats, rice, beans are your friends. Black beans in a can with some hot sauce and yeast is a good combo. Can be a bit dry so add salsa or plain greek yogurt if that bothers you

debatable

i don't question the science behind keto and you are probably completely right. i'm eating at a 300 caloric deficit trying to lower my bodyfat. i did keto for like 2-3 months and was super carbphobic and i lost a ton of weight.
but fact is my runs improved after i started eating carbs. maybe it's because i just do high intensity 5ks instead of long distance stuff.

"Total testosterone increased significantly from Weeks 0-11 in the KD diet (118 ng/dl) as compared to the WD (-36 ng/dl) from pre to post while insulin did not change."
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28399015

I don't know of any conclusive studies, though. But at the very least, such a diet would not restrict testosterone production from the supply side (test is made from cholesterol, which raises with saturated fat intakes).

You CAN'T perform correctly and optimally without carbs , even the "fat adaptation" for ultra endurance athlete is more of an "carb sparing" adaptation , you want to use fat because it allow you to spare more carbs , because at the second you're out of carbs in a race you're O U T

Because low calorie diets are catabolic by nature and reduce nitrogen balance, and fasting is more catabolic than eating a low calorie diet and reduces nitrogen balance even further.

Ultra marathon runners or utlra distance runners literally use the slowest energy system in the body.
They still don't do keto, they use carbs just like anyone else, their diet is simply higher in fats than the olympic marathon runner who eats loads of carbs.

This, I barely lose any muscle at all while fasting. I dropped 50 lbs off in a few months and felt amazing. Compare this to the last two times I slowly restricted calories--both times, I felt weak and unable to exercise or think, and I felt like I'd fall over whenever someone walked by me. I lost roughly the same amount of weight both times, but gained it back. I haven't gained back the weight i lost fasting, maybe in part because I love fasting, and like I said, I've retained almost all my muscle mass.

Anon is right; there's so much God damn misinformation. Do your own first hand research. Trial and error. You'll eventually realize that lots of people are lying.

Insulin is also the one reason why people become fat and gives a wide range of negative effects.

>The hypoglycemia (pathologically low glucose levels) that resulted from ICT made patients extremely restless, sweaty, and liable to further convulsions and "after-shocks". In addition, patients invariably emerged from the long course of treatment "grossly obese".[5] The most severe risks of insulin coma therapy were death and brain damage, resulting from irreversible or prolonged coma respectively.[1][6] A study at the time claimed that many of the cases of brain damage were actually therapeutic improvement because they showed "loss of tension and hostility".[12] Mortality risk estimates varied from about one percent[2] to 4.9 percent.[13]

If you think a small rise in HGH is gonna make up for your shitty diet you're beyond delusional.
HGH rises all the time when insulin goes down.
HGH rises when you're in a fasted state during your sleep.
Your simpleton simplistic view of human biology makes me laugh.
Separating single excreted circulating hormones in the human body and making a big deal out of a small difference in increase or reduction in its concentration is retarded without looking at OTHER hormones.

No, that is WITHOUT EXOGENOUS GH, read the whole study.

8 subjects were examined on four occasions.
1. before fasting
2. after 40h of fasting
3. after 40h of fasting with suppression of GH
4. after 40h of fasting with exogenous GH replacement

In the state BEFORE fasting muscle protein breakdown was at 17+/-4, after 40h of fasting it was at 26+/-9, after 40h of fasting with GH suppression it was at 33 +/-7, after 40h of fasting with exogenous GH it was at 25+/-6 nmol/min.

Again, read the study you linked.
