What exactly does resting entail? Is it just sleep, or does your body recover when staying still? If i sit at the computer the remaining hours of the day aside from the gym am I more "rested" than if i were active?

SLEEP is when your body rebuilds the things you're specifically tearing down for purposes of getting stronger.

yes. But even when you are stationary, your organs, brains, eyes, and everything else works.
Don't forget that your body is a one big unit and everything works together.
This is why sleeping is the best recovery for your body. Almost everything in your body is at rest in that period.
Computer is a good way to rest your muscles yes but sleep is much better.
