in theory you should cut until you are skinny enough to see your muscles nicely and then you can slowly bulk

make sure you're eating plenty of protein even when cutting though otherwise you are muscles won't grow

I'll suppose that you have a short training age (>3 Months), if this is the case then it's a matter of recompositioning; that is, losing fat and gaining muscle. During your first 1-2 months you should experience this, especially if you are exceedingly overweight. This will end pretty soon, so make sure to cut back on the calories a bit and eat a good amount of protein, you should be okay.

I just never liked the idea of counting calories like some obsessive. Which would be necessary, I suppose, when I am ready to bulk.

I feel this is a good explanation of what I've experienced. My physique has improved though I've never been overweight. Yeah, It's been three months. My arms, shoulders, neck, legs, were skinny with some fat on my belly (I have the genes to not expand everywhere, just store fat in the gut like those good old beer tummies on old people). This physique isn't as easy to see that people are overweight as long as your belly doesn't protrude. I've lost like 6 kg, which isn't much, I just expected to have grown when I stepped on the scale after a while. Well imagine my surprise.
Still not satisfied with the amount of fat in that area, so, will not cut yet. Thanks for advice.

Its a lot more easy to input calores then output them. Why? because output takes WORK. You can burn almost a thousand calories in strenuous weight lifting. People get lazy and dont do cardio or lower/upper body next day. Then they qq and make excuses that their body sucks and other people have lucky weight loss genetics.
