What's more important: keeping rest times short or lifting heavier weights? I feel like I'm gimping myself out of 5x5 at a certain weight by only having 90 seconds rest. 180-300 seconds and I could EASILY do them, but is it cheating/doesn't count?

My question is which one outweighs the other? More weight/less intensity, or less weight/more intensity? Same number of sets and reps.

the rest time is for your atp reserves to recover, not getting enough rest means training at lower intensity because you literally will not have enough energy to stress your system to its full potential. you're trading strength gains for endurance but if that's your goal fine.

volume = sets x reps, total tonnage, or number of hard sets

Conditioning is what dictates how rest you truly need. If you poorly conditioned - in lifting terms - it might take longer for you to take the best of each set, in general the fact that most lifters need few minutes on itself speaks much about strength training community.
