Your brain does not suffer specifically from being in a coma. Especially in case of a medically induced coma, where the situation is controlled.
That's not to say comas are good for the brain; they're generally bad for everything. But sometimes comas are better than the alternative.

That said, Piana's coma is related to his brain, but the damage will be from being KO for an extended period of time before they got him to hospital.
