Medfag here. Does anyone have a screencap of the anon who wrote a blog post on what it was like to die from diabetes? I'm a Medfag and it was probably the best layman's description of the physiological process I've ever seen.

>>
Can someone also offer an explanation why people say "zero" drinks are as bad for you as regular?
>>
>>42559651
Seconded. I don't get that either.
>>
>>42559651
>>42559668

Some studies have shown that zero drinks when consumed under certain circumstances can spike insulin in a similar fashion to regular sugary drinks.

Even if this was true (not super familiar with the literature but I believe it's divided), the low quality excess calories from sugary drinks would also make you gain excess fat, which would obviously increase the chance of becoming a beetus. In conclusion, drink water. If you have to drink soda, drink zero sugar drinks.
>>
>>42559651
There is no reason. A study came out recently, in fact, debunking this. Participants switched out all their soda for 0 calorie drinks. They lost weight.

Now, there is a theoretical problem with this, however. The sort of attitude that leads you to drink 0 calorie, heavily artificially sweetened shit, is the same one that got you fat in the first place. You're still acting like a fucking fat ass. In the long run, in order to lose weight you need to change the fundamental behavioral no-no's that you're executing.

Most research shows that the majority of people on "diets" end up putting the weight back on. It's because most fat people lose weight, but on the inside they're still fucking fatasses. It only takes a little time for the fatass to come back out. Sweetened drinks are symptomatic of the fatass's existence continuing inside of you.
>>
>>42559720
Thanks! I also heard that Zero drinks make you hungrier, but i never experienced that, so I guess it's different from person to person.
>>
>>42559736
When you're planet mode replacing anything that contains 80 grams of sugar with something that contains 0 grams of sugar makes you hungry. This does not apply to people who don't partake in competitive coca cola drinking.

Misinformation
The fact that it's a soda (phosphoric acid, coyingly sweet, tends to create cravings for more, etc.)
Doesn't solve the addiction/dependance problem many have, just the calorie part

It's better to have it than regular soda or a cup of Minute Maid or Ocean Spray, but (I believe) that much sweetness ruins your taste buds. [blog] I used coke zero to cut out a couple thousand kcal a day when I decided to stop being a hamplanet, but I realised that I couldn't eat beef without wanting it; the meal just didn't feel complete. Every time I drank coke zero, I also felt like I had to have some high fat meal to go with it, so I dropped it after fighting the cravings. [/blog]

Obesity is a major risk factor for T2DM, however excessive sugar consumption with lack of exercise can both result in decreased insulin sensitivity and can contribute to the development of T2DM. Typically obese patients would have already satisfied the above two.

Short answer, don't get fat.

Weight isn't the only indicator of health.

There's about 20 other things in soft drinks other than sugar that shouldn't be going into your body.

A couple cabs a week isn't bad, but I'd bet money you're doing serious damage to yourself if you're downing a two litre a day.

No problem there, I've just switched from monthly to every other month visits, but I go regularly.

How low is low carb? A serving of oats is like 30g carbs, I've been around 45g per day, so I haven't really considered oats viable.

>>42567553
That's the part I don't entirely get. My A1C is non diabetic, but I gather my insulin resistance still exists. Will it heal over time if I'm not overtaxing my system with sugar?

There's not a lot of science to back it up. There are people out there who claim "MUH CHEMICALS" even though the FDA has said time and time again it's fine.

In terms of fat loss, the only thing they can ever connect is that people who drink diet sodas are usually fatter than those who don't.

But there's a really obvious reason for that - fat people switch to diet to cut calories. They're drinking diet drinks because they're fat, they're not fat because they're drinking diet drinks.

There may be some truth to the idea that a zero calorie beverage that still tastes sweet could encourage you to make unhealthy eating choices, but if you can actually control what and how much you eat, there is nothing wrong with diet soda other than it's a little abrasive on your teeth.

In short, you're ALWAYS pre-diabetic or diabetic now. You'll go through periods it's possible to survive without insulin shots but the moment you fuck your diet you'll need em again.

It's 100% possibly to live a normal life but only if your diet/fitness is on point. It's a harsh reality but you can still live healthy, just keep going. You best be working out you stupid fuck.
>>
>>42567868
Diabetes fat fuck here, I'm >>42564543

That was my assumption as well. With no sugar from carbohydrates, I'd assume blood sugar must go down, so I've been sticking to 45g of carbs daily (low enough for keto).

However, there are claims that keto diets, or any diet high in fat, actually causes or exacerbates diabetes. I haven't adequately seen it explained why, though. I'd love it if a medfag could weigh in.

Whatever the truth is, low carb is working for me.

>>42567968
I'm fine with needing to eat right, that will make it easier to stay on track. My real concern is how restrictive my new diet will be. Right now I'm basically eating a ketogenic diet. Is that my new normal? Can I have a carb heavy meal a few times a week without worrying, or is it better to just forget about them.

Of course I'm working out. I joined a gym two months ago and I'm going 6 days a week. I'm headed there now, even.
>>
>>42568011
>Can I have a carb heavy meal a few times a week without worrying, or is it better to just forget about them.
This is entirely dependent on you and how bad it is for you. It also depends what you mean by carb heavy.
If you mean eating an entire cake to yourself you better get over the fact that isn't possible anymore, If you mean spaghetti it's POSSIBLE but how about you worry about that once you're healthier.

Bet on a carb 'heavy' meal 1-3 times a a week. This should allow you to enjoy life still.
>>
>>42568025
Yeah, I mean like spaghetti.

There's nothing for me to worry about right now, I know what I'm doing is working. If I can keep up my weight loss at this rate I should be in a healthy weight range for my height in two or three months. I'm going to go lower, try to get to a low bf% to cut the gut, and then lean bulk to build muscle.
I'm thinking, given obesity and its relation to diabetes, the best defense is to build more muscle.

Losing weight felt difficult, until I had no other choice. I escaped blindness as an infant by luck, I'm not losing now to this shit.
>>
>>42568081
Sounds like you'll be fine. Yes, spaghetti is possible in your life still. Just be careful.

I was almost you. Literally pre-diabetic and doctors told me it was do or die. Did enough research that scared the shit out of me and now I can enjoy lifes little pleasures without worry. I think even as you are you can still enjoy life, and I've heard it's possible to practically reverse diabetes with proper diet+fitness. This means you can enjoy life as a normal functioning person but can't slip in to unhealthy habits or its INSULIN time.

So again, yes, in the future you can have that spaghetti my dude. The thing is most people don't make life changes and don't better themselves. They just live with insulin shots. You CAN reverse it or make life livable again.
It just takes more work than the average person. Keto is great because you wont be as hungry and obviously insulin is on point. Don't go super carb and pig out, find your tolerance once you've hit your goals man. Monitor your levels on fucking point till you find what works for you.

I will say it again. It IS possible to live a normal life and reverse most diabetic impact, unless you REALLY fucked up. You sound like you're making good life choices and clearly see the affects.

>>
>>42568129
I appreciate it. I wish I had a pre-diabetes diagnosis warning. Last year at my checkup everything was fine, this year boom: full blown beetus.

But yeah, that turned me around real fast.
>>
>>42559564
Most of that is completely wrong. Insulin is not required for glucose uptake anywhere except parts of the liver, and the average diabetic uses up about twice as much glucose per minute as the average healthy person, sometimes more. Glucose uptake is primarily determined by blood glucose concentration, i.e. the concentration gradient towards the cell. Diabetics have high blood sugar because the liver produces way too much glucose all the time, it's like running around with an hyperglycemic glucose infusion IV drip. At the same time, FFAs are elevated when they should be suppressed, and serum FFAs cause insulin resistance as well as inhibiting the oxidation of glucose at a cellular level. The combined influx of fatty acids and glucose into cells causes mitochondrial and cellular metabolic overload as well as the accumulation of vast amounts of intracellular fat and toxic intermediate metabolites leading to cell death which releases acids and inflammatory cytokines into circulation

Bro I was diagnosed at 12.9 a1c finger prick ,13.5 actual blood test in december, was started on insulin and gluco phage, In 3 weeks I accomplished losing 15 pounds by cutting out all white sugar and all sugary drinks including juice. At the 3 month mark I was down to 5.5 A1c and also down 40 pounds and was taken off insulin. At 6 months I was at 5.1 a1c and down 70 pounds, starting weight was 370. All I did was cut out sugar and and sugary drinks, I cut out potatoes and white rice as well as pasta and bread. I switched to truvia and splenda for my coffee and tee. I wouldnt say i was doing keto but pretty close to it. I was keeping my self at 50-70 grams of carbs. My doc says if I cross the 100 pounds lost mark he will take me of my metformin pill. When I was diagnosed I was sleeping about 3 hours a night I was drinking about 2 gallons a day, and I was urinating every hour on the dot. My change was so drastic that after the first week, I could not see straight for 2 weeks every thing was blurry I thought I was going to go blind. Luckily my vision returned to normal at the end of the 3rd week. I had my eyes checked and I was lucky no damage done to my eyes and I had better than 20/20 vision. I will never go back to what I was I cant even stand anything sweet to sweet any more. My one treat is no sugar added klondike bars they have 5 grams of sugar. Diabetes can be managed and you can avoid the horrible complications of Diabetes. We are going to make it bros. Now, im going to go back to lifting after 10 years of not lifting.

>>42568502
Type 2 diabetes is extremely complex and there isn't a really strong consensus on many aspects of it even in the most recent scientific literature. Many of the systems involved have redundancies in place so that if one pathway fails you don't immediately get diabetes. But that also means that different diabetics can have different underlying pathologies, and different treatments will have different effects with different people, and you can't really come up with a single integrated model to always explain all of it.

Just as an example, there are many pathways that can get the liver to reduce glucose output - insulin can do it directly, but the liver also responds to the concentration of free fatty acids and adjusts glucose output accordingly, so the insulin sensitivity and cellular health of adipose tissue can be important. The hypothalamus can sense glucose concentration and tell the liver to stop producing glucose, but it's also involved in GSIS for the pancreas. The alpha-cells can become insulin-resistant which leads to permanently elevated glucagon, but it's not immediately clear what happens when glucagon and insulin compete in the liver. Even in the past few years there's still discussion among the experts as to which of these pathways is actually "the most relevant" or the one that fails in t2 diabetics. Some people believe muscle IR is defensive, others don't.

And there are many possible factors and contributing factors involved, so a lot of charlatans and shills will latch on to something and say ONLY THIS causes diabetes.

As for recommendations, probably anything scientific is a good bet, but that requires some time and effort to get into if you don't have a background, but it's definitely possible. You can read a textbook on diabetes (Principles of Diabetes Mellitus), you can read scientific papers in journals like Diabetes, Cell, Nutrients etc. Use sci-hub to access those papers.

Hey, I'm a Type 1 who is using Keto. I eat about 10 to 20 carbs a day with some citrus fruit once a week. So far its fucking great. Ive lost 50 pounds and my blood sugars are more stable than they have been in years. The only insulin I take regularly is 20 units of lantus at night. Other than that I might take 3 or 4 units of Humalog every few days.

As far as the insulin resistance goes, my understanding is that an increase in saturated fat in the blood is a catalyst for insulin resistance. I'm not sure what the actual mechanism is, but I can definitely confirm that my insulin works at a slower rate than normal. Not dramatically, but enough to have to plan ahead more. Ive recently been cutting back on my animal fat and meat intake in general. Right now my diet is about 30% animal sourced and 70% plant, where before it was close to 50/50. I feel more energized and the insulin resistance has improved. Plus eating that much meat made it so I had to drink half a pot of coffee a day just to stave off chronic constipation.
