Have to go until failure, and you can't be busting out 50 reps either. I do 5/3/1 or 5x5 most squat days for example, and on a volume day once a month or so I'll blast out 15 reps of 225 with no more than a second of pause in between reps, rack, wait 30 seconds, blast out another 10, rack, wait 30 seconds, blast out another 8 or so, drop to 185, blast out as much as possible, rack, 15 seconds, blast out like 3 reps then my legs are just fucking done.
Try doing heavy drop sets like that on volume days. I'm usually unable to walk afterwards. I do similar shit for bench, but it's rare I do volume days to begin with.
