About to start PPL and I was thinking : 3x5 on compounds or 3x8-12?
The internet memes you into doing 3x5 or 5x5 but all my fit friends with juicy muscles have been always doing 3x8-12. Are higher rep ranges goat for aesthetics?
Just do a mix of rep ranges, you raging autist

1x5 followed by 2x10
2x8 warmup sets then 3x8 at working weight

TIGHT
Doing higher reps per set is what cause me to explode in size rapidly. I was alwaya fairly big doing obkt 5x5 but switching to 4x8 for compounds saw huge gains in strength and size over a month or two. Give whatever works for you a shot.
I do legs for 3 sets of 5 to 8 reps.
For upper body I do compound lifts for 4 to 6 sets of 6 to 12 reps. For isolation I do 3 to 5 sets of 8 to 15 reps.
I try to stagger the volume, so that if it's a higher number of sets for compound lifts that day, I'm doing the lower end of the set & rep range for the isolations, and vice versa.
If you're still within your first year, I would try to keep the compounds closer to 6-8 reps and make increases on the amount of weight, otherwise you might not progress as fast as you could and end up spinning your wheels.
