Is there any reason to do low reps for strength and muscle gains? For example, if I work up to a bench press weight I can do for less than 10 reps, and then do a few back off sets, and add weight to the bar when I hit 10 reps with x amount of weight, doesn't that work as well as say 5x5? If I bench weight close to my 5rm I find it really hard to unrack the bar and I feel like there is more stress on my joints, and I'm worried that I might snap my shit up as my joints are weak as fuck.

Both work but not for the same things. Doing lower weight for higher reps encourages hypertrophy and muscle endurance. High weight with low reps encourages strength gains.

You should be. Heavy weights are always more dangerous than light weight. Though, that's the price you pay for strength.
