Thats cuz your abs have more to do with what you eat. The main reason to train abs is functionality, not looks. If you wanna squat a lot of weight, you gotta have your fucking abs and obliques and lower back be strong, because otherwise your core will not handle the weight you put on it when squatting. You can make your abs a bit thicker with training, but not that much.
