Won't bending your back like this cause injury? My friend told me that you need to keep your back 100% straight when you do rows. How do you know you're doing it correctly?

The natural shape of the spine isn't exactly straight, it has an arch in the lumber (or lower) region. Kind of looks like an S.

Hm. How about Pendlay rows. Basically, and this is a real question... is this guy serious? I've never seen anyone with their chest absolutely parallel to the ground in the gym. I've done this exercise a few times and it feels awkward, like I'm not really working anything.

Yes he's serious it's a good lift.
The regular "bent over barbell row" that you usually see encourages cheating and is almost always done poorly. This is much better variation of the row.
