Lifting problems general?

I noticed a lot of people on here seem to have conditions like pectus excavatum, scoliosis, poland syndrome, etc. that might make getting fit harder, so how about a general where people can trade advice, feels, and bants?

>Pic related

Got a bit of a curve that makes overhead exercises a bitch because asymmetrical shoulders, also makes sleeping on my right side fucking suck. I just use dumbbells or cables instead of a barbell though
>>
>>42227454
I am in the process of recovering form osteoporosis and am afraid to deadlift/squat heavy.
>>
>>42227454
My scoli makes barbell rows feel weird. Might just switch to dumbbell if i can't work it out. Other BB exercises also feel a little off, but can deal with it.
>>
>>42228237
Did the same thing, much better off for it, plus you work each side individually
>>
>>42228230
What sorta stuff did you do for treatment? Did you discuss it with your doc?
>>
>>42227454
Scolibrosis here, deadlifts feel like hell so I don't do them. Squats are fine though. My main problem is trying to fix my muscle imbalances.

>>
>>42228934
I pull 450 just fine but can only front squat, back squats fuck my shit up.
Same here on muscle imbalances though, mostly in my lats and erectors.
>>
>>42228230

I had scoliosis in my teenage years and had to get spinal fusion. I'm not 25 and still afraid to squat/deadlift heavy. On the plus side you always have to be conscious and on point with your form.
>>
>>42229041
Do you have a degree of pain or discomfort associated with your fusion? Also do you find it limits your movement or mobility in the gym?
I'm right on the verge of surgery, where I could if I was so inclined, but don't necessarily need to yet. I'd be interested to hear from someone who has gotten it should the need arise in the future.
>>
Dumbells > Barbells

Fun fact: The barbell got invented by a Communist named Hyppolite Triat back in the 19th century.

You really want to use a Commie invention? i sure don't.
>>
>>42229065

Not really any pain, the discomort you stop noticing after a while. The biggest drawback is obviously flexibility. I'd suggest swimming as a great cardio/whole body activity which will help with your rehabilitation. Also like the person mentioned before me, use Dumbells.

I'd suggest getting surgery asap as it will otherwise only get worse. Make sure your surgeon is conscious of your post-op posture as well as you're more or less stuck with it. Mine botched mine a bit and one of my shoulders sits lower.

I was looking at Hippolyte Triat on jewgle and found a picture of ManletDestiny's great grandfather.

I should also mention that my fusion was about 70% of my spine as well, not a small fusion.

Anyone with pectus carinatum (opposite of excavatum)? I just started lifting and I don't know if chest exercises will fuck me up in the long run or something.
>>
>>42229179

No worries. Be prepared for everyone to comment on how much taller you get, I grew 11cm post-op.

Why does my right shoulder click when I do shoulder press? Torn rotator cuff? Is this normal? Please help im scared.
>>
>>42229189
Already 6'4" (193cm) so I hear it a lot. I'm looking at about 2" (5cm) post-op iirc. At least there's a silver lining lmao.
>>
>>42227454
i'm pretty sure i have a pincer hip impingement
makes doing squats just not possible
plus i've been a lazy fuck and haven't been to a doctor
I don't want surgery bros
wat do?
>>
>>42229229
Your RC is likely not torn if you're able to do the movement at all, it's quite painful. Your RC is likely just weaker than your delts. If you go see a physio or athletic trainer they can provide you with some exercises to strengthen the joint to prevent damage and clicking.
>>

After months of aching joints the doctors have found out what it was anklyosis spondylitis. In 20 years I will have the back of a 70 year old (currently 25). My spine is slowly fusing together. I guess this means no more lifting for me, I have only used very light weights the past few months hoping the aches would go away but it looks like this is permanent and medication might slow it but nothing will stop it.
>>
>>42229250
Thanks I'll ask around.
And yeah I can still do the lifts, just 1-2 reps less on each set with my right side. I can feel it click every rep. I started doing the chest press and dont hear the clicking but my right side is still definitely weaker.
>>
>>42229241
Try to stop squatting for a bit and see if it feels any better, you can also take some OTC anti-inflammatory meds and see if that helps. If not go to a doctor, you likely won't get surgery, usually they set up a physiotherapy regimen and some script NSAIDs that will alleviate the pain.
If it comes down to it, the surgery is fairly noninvasive.
>>
>>42229250
>>42229229
this
also it's to strengthen the muscle not joint
strengthening teres major minor and the other one i can't remember forces your humerus to set in a better position
but honestly it could just be a minor tendinitis
if i were you i wouldn't do shoulder stuff for a week
see if pain and clicking persists
if it does it's likely a underdeveloped rotator cuff
>>
>>42229256
Here is what my spine will look like.
>>
>>42229265
I haven't squated in more than a month but dull pain still persists when i go down
i'm pretty sure it's a pincer impingement because i've dealt with a double shoulder one and it fixed itself in a week
plus i can see a clear asymmetry in my legs when i'm at the bottom of a squat
could be because my hip impingement doesn't let one of my femurs bend or whatever as the other one
>>
>>42229256
>>42229271
Fuck. Sorry to hear about that my dude. At the very least there's anti-inflammatory meds to reduce the pain. I hope they find a better way to remedy that in the future.
>>
>>42229271
fuck m8
sorry to hear that
what causes that shit though?
is it hereditary
>>
>>42229301
May be the case. Go see a doctor you mong, there's only so much I can do for you online :^)
>>
>>42229313
but i don't want to get cut up again
it's fucking time consuming
fun looking at them cut your shit up but fucking waiting in line and shit is just suicide tier
>>
>>42229313
btw i was thinking about buying lifting shoes and seeing if the increased ankle angle would decrease the hip one so the pincer imp doesn't hit my femur
should i do this or just stop being a lazy faggot and go to the doctor?

I'd meet you in an alley with my scalpel set and scope but we live in a regulatory hellscape.
>>
>>42229302
>>42229312
There is a chance the medication could slow it so my spine wont be fucked for 50 years instead of 20, which I will be 75 then so doesnt sound too bad. I constant aching joints are probably the worst part.
And its mostly hereditary. 90% percent of people who have this shit have a certain genetic trait (a human leukocyte antigen known as HLA-B27). 0.1% - 1.8% of the population have it (certain populations have it more often, specifically Scandinavian people), most of them are males, and it typically comes on when youre a young adult. There are a bunch of other little things i might develop like "About 40% of people with AS will also experience inflammation of the anterior chamber of the eye, causing eye pain, redness, floaters and sensitivity to light." Despite all this life expectancy is only a little lower than average, although quality of life is terrible
>>
>>42229347
You can try but if it comes down to that or telling you to stop being a lazy faggot I'm going to choose the latter.
>>
>>42229360
how is that illegal?
if you're a licensed physician what would they charge you with?
probably not paying taxes
>>
>>42229367

>>
>>42229383
An alleyway doesn't really meet the standards required for an office based surgery (any surgery performed outside of a hospital or outpatient center/clinic). It changes by state. Here is a PDF about the standards that must be met by state.

Since scoliosis would reduce someone's effective height while still having the same length of spine, does that throw off calculations that rely on height like BMI, TDEE and body fat percentages?
>>
>>42229426
probably not
at least not by a significant margin
>>
>>42229426
I go by my measured height, the differences in TDEE isn't that great.
I get my bf measured in a clinic and they're aware of my scoliosis so it either doesn't factor, or they do something to account for it. I'll ask next time I go.
I don't use BMI since I'm technically overweight on that scale anyway, so I'm unsure.
>>
>>42228966
>>42228934

I know these fucking feels, right shoulder rounds due to thoracic scoliosis so when i deadlift I can feel the uneven load pulling one side wayy more. I've considered doing hyper extensions and leg press instead
>>
>>42229154

This is really good advice, also on the verge, getting an xray in the next few months to see if my curves have stabilized, if not I'm joining you fusion bros
>>
>>42229187
yeah man, dips hurt so fucking much
>>
>>42229213

Jesus christ how the fuck do you get there missing half your chest, mirin
>>
>>42229256

Buddy of mine is dealing with this, you'd be surprised how much of a difference medication can make, best of luck dude, were gonna make it
>>
>>42228230
I don't know how bad your case was but lifting heavy is a great way to semi-permanently increase bone density.

Steroids will also give you bones so dense you should worry about creating a black hole and disappearing
>>
>>42227454
SI joint disorder, I think I broke it when I fell on it and since yesterday it was popped back in, or straightened out by a fisio. But today in the shower when I reached for shampoo I think it may have slipped again...god I hope not, why is this such a bitch to deal with? Stay in place already reeeeee :(
>>
>>42228783
They just said to take a vitamin D suppliment and calcium. They waited a year after I got surgery done on my lung before making the decision to put me on Forteo or not - my dexascan showed almost a 33% improvement in bone density.
>>
>>42229271
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
>>
>>42227454
>>42228966
Is shit like this just your anatomy you were born with or is this the result of lifting?
>>
>>42227454
I have a ~30 degree scoliosis curve, it makes me nervous to squat/dl so I've been keeping the weight very light and focusing on form.

All of the advice I've seen on here has either been to not worry about it, or to stop lifting because I'll fuck myself up.
>>
>>42229367

If it's any consolation there's currently loads of research going into autoimmune diseases like that, and drugs being developed to target very specific parts of the immune system. There may not be something great right now, but give it 20-30 years and it could have changed, there's always hope bro

Or just become wolverine or some shit
>>
>>42231269
Shit that's really impressive, I wouldn't push it with those lifts unless the doc said you can, but you can do other stuff to make up for it like leg press and hyper extension which as mentioned earlier
>>
>>42230608

You can get it fused with a fairly minimal surgery apparently

Scoliosis guy here. When I come up from the squat I think my body is kind of shifting to the left side. I think I'm using the left side of my body way more than the right to do the lift.

Anyone know what's going on and is there any way to correct that? Is there at least some kind of supplemental exercise I could do on the right side of my body afterwards to keep things in balance?
>>
>>42233537
Unfortunately that's just the way you're built, so you have to really pay attention to form. However, one exercise that helped me a ton for heavier lifts was planks, having a tight core made me lean visibly less. Try side planks and regular planks as part of your warm up
>>
>>42234797
This. Core strength is key, coming from a person with scoliosis as well.
>>
>>42233352
My doctor doesn't even know I lift ;)
>>
>>42235316
You fucking madman.
>>
>>42229367
Take hemp oil, smoke weed
>>
>>42231498
Some people are born with the possibility of developing it. It can happen on it's own and in some cases shit you do as a teen/tween can trigger it/ make it worse. It's not a result of lifting.
>>
>>42235316
MODS
>>
>>42231498
You either develop it at some point during childhood/adolescence when you get a growth spurt (likely due to genetics but were not totally sure yet) or you have some other imbalance (leg lengths, muscle spasms on one side, etc.) which can be fixed by getting to the underlying cause
>>
>>42229256
No you dummy. My mom and bro have ankylosing spondylitis and you got it completely wrong, exercise -- including lifting -- will help you.
Some doctors will say that you should do pilates but there's not much research pointing it as a particularly good option. Supposedly anything will do, but both my bro and mom started feeling less pain once I made them squat and deadlift.

You should overall avoid anything inflammatory, and stress and bad sleeping habits. Medication will help you but the more you use it, the higher the chances of you having kidney/liver problems later on.
>>
>>42227454
Scoliosis should no affect you're lifting. I have a major curvature and I squat 3 times a week and dl twice with zero problems. Do Stuart mcgills big 3 every day and you'll be fine
>>
>>42237553
Not effect your* Jesus fuck I hate autocorrect
