Modern studies do actual hard science on this. It's all but settled that homosexuality is naturally occurring (i.e. twin studies, genetic research) and likely serves "gay uncle theory".

It was about how we expect the two genders to look like and behave and how we tend to assume that every character trait is a dichotomy on a scale between female and male.
