Fighters have used situps for hundreds of years to strengthen their abs against punishing blows. Dont replace the classic but effective move with some memetastic exercise.

I forgot to mention i'm working from a home gym so all I have at my disposal lift-wise are a couple dumbells and a bench

Leg raises on the floor are fine too, but your form has to be good. Follow up sets of laying leg raises with sit-ups. Killer combo; make sure to do both, as they work the abs from different directions.

Well in that case, just do some crunches on the ab machine.
