What is your current swimming experience?

I used to swim competitively in my early teens, but I've generally favoured lifting and running for the past 7-8 years. My technique is nearing athlete level

I don't really frequent this board, so I don't understand.

So you know what the fuck's up then. I don't know why you're here. There was a guy asking a similar question the other day doing 2700 yards in 2 hours and I told him he wasn't pushing hard enough to build muscle.
Swimming is just another form of cardio and just like biking you can build some muscle with it. Muscle comes from sprints but can also come from the distance, just not as quickly.
You don't need to completely rule out resistance training, just figure out how to integrate it like you do with running. But yes you can look good by just swimming especially if you've been lifting. I think that's what you're asking.

Professional swimmers also lift weights and eat like pigs

Because they burn a shit ton of calories through their training. If they want to maintain weight, they have to eat a lot
