What is the real average male bench press taking into account guys inflating their numbers by 100+ lbs? I find it hard to believe the average guys benches 180 lbs
>>
nowhere close to that

the average starting weight I observe at the gym is around 50 kg
>>
The average male is definitely not benching anywhere near that

I'd be surprised if the average male could bench 100 lbs
>>
>>41964590
So I'm probably correct and its mostly guys just massively inflating their numbers? I'd guess that most of the population cant bench their own weight let alone 1plate

>105kg
>Really? When I used to lift, back when I was 16, I was benching 120 bro

Every time.
>>
180 seems like a reasonable average. But it's definitely not the median
>>
>>41964541
i would say that is the max average in the gym.

most dudes don't actually go to the gym in th 16-35 range, hardly any fat fucks go to the gym older than that.
>>
I would guess the average guy can probably do 1plate for one really sketchy ass-off-bench rep.

Maybe a bit more if the guy is a fatass.
>>
>>41964541
Seems pretty average where I live, but there's a lot of factory workers and farmers here, so it's probably not gonna be the average everywhere
>>
I feel better about doing like 140 pounds x10 now. I know that without serious bulk I'd never reach 1pl8 but I just wanna get to "working out with 180 pounds"
>>
>>41964541
Worldwide?
Male population disregarding age?
Probably

>>
It's hard as fuck to tell, most guys I know never do 1rm's and don't know what they *can* bench.

>"hey bro how much do you bench"
>"155 for reps, but I could probably bench 225 one time if I tried"

Recent convo with a friend.
>>
>>41964974
Yeah well according to /fit the average browser is 6'8''+ and 300lbs+
>>
>>41964541
it's feeling pretty summer in my gym right now so i'm not seeing many impressive lifts. lots of the beginners are still stuck <135lbs which is pretty sad desu. i was able to bench lmao1plaet as a 15 y/o twig faggot. still seeing guys bigger than me struggle with 185 which is more astounding.
>>
>>41964541
if you're an average size guy and have done literally anything physical in your entire life, you should be able to bench press your body weight without ever training for it

if you can't you are either way too fat, or way too underweight
>>
>>41965059
You are delusional fampai.
Average would be around 50-60kg.

Lifting 13 months and my best is 185 for 4 reps.

My chest is absolute garbage.
>>
>>41964613
That sentence didn't make sense. It should be can't bench 1plate let alone their own weight. Unless everyone has suddenly turned anorexic.
>>
>>41965081
if you can do 30 or more pushups, benching your body weight one time should be no problem

do people not have gym class anymore? When I was in high school I can honestly remember maybe one normal sized male not being able to 30 pushups. Most of the people i know could bang out 50. This was before I ever lifted.

are you guys just a bunch of sedentary neets who think the entire world is like you?

I'm sorry but you are pathetically below average

Avg male that doesn't work out is between 40-60kg bench.

I can do 155 for like 8 reps. I can put 185 up for a one gross rep. I feel like that's really weak still.

Guys how's my specs for 9 months of lifting? In lbs

deloaded more times than I can count
>>
>>41964603
i mean the average male who has never lifted yeah, but there's a lot of blue collar people who do physically demanding jobs resulting in decent benches even if they don't lift. I'd guess average is 115.

I would say the average bench is over 100, but perhaps the average guy can't put up more than 100 - depends on if you're looking at average dude or mean of population.
>>
>>41965202
the correlation is different for most, and some calculators just overshoot completely in 1RM calculations. 1 RM is the best way to measure strength
>>
I just started lifting late may, so under a month now. I'm fat as fuck(6'2" 297lbs[was 392 in january]) and have never really needed strength for anything in my life. A few days ago I did my first 5x5 135lbs BP. Id' say thats a good average for gymgoers, but I doubt iot holds up for anyone who doesn't regularly go(Not including people with physically active jobs).

I might also be off a tad because I use the machine for it, given I have noone to go with.
>>
>>41965286
Kind sir, it is common practice to include the weight of the bar when measuring a lift.
>>
>>41965167
You're doing it wrong. You're supposed to list the weights that you can do 5 reps of, not your one rep maxes.
>>
>tfw my bench stalled at literally 180

i'm only 5'7" but still. it's embaressing
>>
>>41965312
use a machine for what? If you use a machine, you're not doing the lift

also, at 300 you're going to have a bit higher absolute numbers than the average non-fat 150 guy
>>
>>41965350
The Smith Machine. I would be using free weights, but I've pinned myself on the bench enough times to want an exit plan.
>>
>>41965312
>I might also be off a tad because I use the machine for it
Yeah, no, that doesn't count.
>>
>>41965369
>pinned myself on the bench

why not just lift the weight off of you?
>>
>>41965369
a smith machine bench press is not your bench press that you can state in forums bucko
>>
>>41965369

Get off the smith machine asap.

Take that flat bench and set it in the power rack with safeties so you can bench for real.
>>
>>41965231
Yeah I meant 2pl8, that's something I'm not reaching in a long time
>>
>>41965421
The gym I go to doesn't have a rack, or I would be. Is a 3D Smith Machine at least a bit better?
>>
>>41964541
Small percentage of people bench around 200 or more. Usually the only ones benching over 200 are also well over 200 pounds so that bench becomes even less impressive. The average is probably around 1 plate

I have long arms and a terrible looking chest and finally did 1 pl8 after a few months.

Judging from the people at my gym, discounting those obv on roids I'd day the average is 160 1rm.

With strict form for reps probably 145

Yeah 180 being the male average overall seems like a giant overshoot. Its very rare to see guys repping that weight, not so rare to see guys who can hit it for one or two, but those are people who have been training for a while.

Also people saying but muh manual labour I guess haven't done a lot of manual labour, there are almost no situation where you need much chest strength, mostly a lot of back core and arm strength is required.

Id say with the twinks that I see walking around these days 100 lbs would be a more realistic average.
>>
Does anyone here do 225 for reps? That has been my goal since starting to lift on and off for the past 3 years. I've been at 210 for reps stopped for a few months and had to start again at 175. I'm at 210 now, 3 sets of 8 reps, but as a fatass losing doing keto as I lift progress is slow. I hope to be doing 225 for reps by oct. or nov.

Before I started lifting, I was naturally athletic and played sports my whole life, and my max was around 115lbs.

So 95-115lbs sounds about right for a regular male.
>>
Dumb topic.
>>
According to Symmetric Strength, an untrained 20 year old male at about 200 pounds should be able to bench press 105lbs. However, keeping in mind how much your lifts increase when you finally get the lifting form down efficiently, a beginner would probably be around 85 to 95 pounds.

>>
>>41966882
1) You overestimate the amount of people who even go to the gym. I did a Fermi estimation on shit like this a long time back here, and I'm not going to do it again, but basically even using insanely optimistic numbers and assuming every single person in a gym was a world-class roider, our numbers are so insignificant, it would barely budge the world average. Doesn't really matter what you're measuring: strength, size (the particular argument then was arm circumference). I could do an extremely simplified version right now. Say one BILLION people went to the gym, exactly half were dudes, and they all benched 315 while the rest of the six billion did not go to the gym, half were male, and they magically lifted 135. The average would still be 161 lbs. Even at all 3 billion males at 155 lbs bench, the average would be just shy at 178 lbs.
2) It's likely you're assuming too much of people who do not train, especially aiming for that 155 upper limit.
>>
Holy fuck what is up with the anons IT who think 180 is impressive. I mean I don't think that's the male average either, but gym average? I think easily. I remember everyone in my high school weightlifting class could at least hit 200 ORM and people here say it's rare to see a guy repping 180 at the gym? I rep 2pl8 and I've certainly never seen anyone act overly impressed with that. And I'm certainly not the biggest or strongest guy at my gym lol
>>
In 3 years of lifting I have seen maybe 4 guys ever hit 2 plate or more, don't believe any of the lies you see on /fit/

Average consistent lifter is usually doing no more than 155. Skellies and dyels can't even do 1 plate

I've been fucking around in the gym on and off for around 2 years. I've been lifting consistently for 8 months and I've brought my bench from 55kg (121lbs) for reps to 95kg(209bs) for 1 rep. About 50kg, when I first started at age 15 I could manage 30kg. At 17, 90kg. At 18, 120kg, and at 24 185kg.

In my experience of training with newbies, going to commercial gyms and just in general watching other people lift, the average is around 30-60kg max, with 1 year - 2 year trained guys doing at most 100kg, usually 70-80kg. 3 years training I tend to see, for those who train a bit more religiously, 120kg max. So on and so forth, though the most I've ever seen anyone else do, apart from ym gym buddy (strongman) and a few powerlifters, is 130kg. They've usually been lifting 4 years +

Bench press is all about technique anyway, and I often see the majority of benchers with shit technique that makes my shoulders hurt to watch. Raw strength can be demonstrated with a strict over head press imo, and I only just manage 120kg OHP all time best. I'm 93kg 5'11 (pic related is me).

To really improve your bench just focus on frequency, technique tweaks, and pushing yourself.

But yea, the average guy benches about 50kg in my ancedotal experience, but I of course don't have any statistics to back that up. Who knows? Find a study comparing the average strength levels among healthy young males!

Really good numbers, you have a good powerlifting career ahead of you if you can get good wilkis numbers. Keep at it bruh. Again, I was benching 30kg when I starte, now I max 185kg. Yet to compete in the IPF but have in smalled feds.

>>41966618
You're new, keep at it. But keep training hard and progress routines as normal, eat enough (don't eat stupid high calories, eat to gain strength, not excess fat)

>>41966833
Suggests you aren't pushing yourself, get psyched up. Push yourself, video your form. Maybe invest in lifting shoes, a belt, who knows what's limiting you? Maybe your bench form isn't right and you can bench (with correct form) less than you think.

I don't know if I was just weird but when I started I had problems with only bench press. I started with 30kg + 20kg bar and did it pretty well but as I started to get more weight I had problems with my left arm joint so I couldnt get over 70kg without injuring myself. On the other site I started Deadlifting 120kg and pretty fast was able to do 210kg (like only 7 weeks)

I was fat not skinny and had some jobs that required to lift heavy stuff but bench press was a problem for my wrist and arm joint and I consider to remove it and do some chest isolation.

180 is way too high. Your average fit (not /fit/ but regular fit) adult male can probably bench 155-180 for reps. This is not including the skinny faggots and the obese neckbeards. For every 315 bench press /fit/izen, there are at least 20 skinny faggots bringing the average down.

Also, asian countries like india and china have poor nutrition and small people. your average indian man couldn't bench 80 pounds, id bet.

>tfw 110lb bench after 3 months lifting
>>
>>41964603
This. In my experience most noobs can lift around 90-100lbs for 5. Some more like 80. With bad form...
Even then, they usually have no understanding of time-under-tension, or the importance of controlling the eccentric. Once you show them, they have to drop a lot of weight to get similar reps.
If they don't, they usually hit a wall pretty quickly and have to reset, only to hit the same wall again shortly after.
As for form, I see lots who barely hit their chest at all. Flailing elbows is usually the biggest issue. Putting a lot of strain on the shoulders and not using the triceps enough (probably same guys who say SS doesn't work arms) - shoulders come forward as they push.
Not using legs.

Advice to anyone who thinks this might apply to them. Your muscles have no idea how much weight you're lifting...
>>
>>41965059
Bullshit. Most won't be able to squat their own body weight, or even dl it for reps. Forget benching it.

Bench strength fluctuates pretty wildly, and it really depends on whether they mean training weight or max effort weight.
My maximum training weight was 305, my maximum effort tested weight was 335, I've cut weight for about 6 months since then and my current training weight is only 245 with maximum effort weight (estimated, not tested) is around 285-295.

possibly flaring your elbows out too much. tuck towards your torso, engage those lats

if you believe you're tucking enough then possibly inflammation. if the pain is increasing and function is decreasing then perhaps a larger issue
>>
>>41967013
Yeah... when most people talk about averages, they should be talking about national or even smaller groups to take the average from. The average person in the United States is in like the top 10% wealth or something compared to the world, because there's so many poor and malnourished people in places like rural India.

Let's talk about average weights with people who aren't dying from iron deficiency
>>
>>41973218

Don't have any recordings unfortunately.

I started arching my back more since I was keeping it completely flat on the bench. I was able to add 15 lbs extra in just a week by adding the arch.
>>
>>41973232

So basically keep the elbows closer to the torso while benching?

Got it.

As for the pain, it normally will be at its worst for about 30 minutes after benching. Usually some mild DOMS in the shoulder the next day and I'm fine. No loss in function or anything.
>>
I'm 6' 4 (1.94) and 225 lbs (102 kg).No routine for 8 months and I've started with :

Bench : 88 lbs (40 kg)
Overhead : 44 lbs (20 kg)
Squat : 88 lbs (40 kg)
Deadlift : 180 lbs (80 kg)

Now , like I said , no routine whatsoever for 8 months , I do pay attention to what I eat , try to hit at least 100 g of protein per day , less carbs and more fats. These are for reps.

Bench : 180 lbs x 5
Overhead : 135x5
Squat : 265x5
Deadlift : 350x5

Got a long way to go , honestly I feel satisfied but I know I should have been doing better.

>SS squat 3x a week
> 1pl8 => 2pl8 in 6 weeks
>nub bench bro benching 3-4x a week
>can't get 2pl8 in 2 to 6 months

I've seen it numerous times. Just because you had to start with the bar because all you did was play world of warcraft when you were young doesn't mean a normal, healthy and active untrained male can't get a 2pl8 bench in 2 months.

Yeah, some little 130lb skinny fat NEET isn't going to get there regardless of their frequency and intensity, but a normal 160+lbs male can get there easy as shit if they're only focusing on benching like most newfags do.
>>
>>41977779
There's a big difference between high frequency squatting and high frequency benching. The squat uses many more and much large muscle groups. The potential for strength progression in the squat is much higher than the bench press or press.
>>
>>41978255
And smaller muscles recover more quickly...

Strength potential on a lift doesn't even matter sub 1/2/3/4 because the weight is so little that it isn't impacting recovery anyway and 24-48 hours is always enough to fully recover if you're sub 1/2/3/4 for a 1rm because your working weight is simply too low to warrant more recovery, regardless of the lift.

My argument is that the amount of energy SS followers put into squats is the same energy that newfags that aren't even on a routine are putting into the bench. The same way you can get a 3 plate squat in 2-6 months focusing on it hard you can get a 2 plate bench in 2-6 months.

The irony is that those starting on a newb program won't ever hit 2pl8 that quickly because they're only benching 3x every 2 weeks, just like the guy on no program will never hit a 3 plate squat because they probably aren't even squatting.

Obviously 2 months is on the lower end and that doesn't mean everyone can get it in 2. I figured giving a range would indicate that.
