Is there truth to the cardio taking muh gains meme?
I'm going to the gym for my first time tomorrow and I plan to run a few miles and lift some dumbbells. Is this stupid? Am I a retard?

Don't worry about cardio stealing your gainz until you have gains to worry about (1 year in, say).
For now, you should be training your heart as well as muscles

sounds like you are being jewed for gains.
i would rather say keep doing 5x5 and add in some chin ups after every workout as well as some band pull aparts in between every push set and band/cable facepulls after every other workout.
im no PT though

We're on /fit/. Of course we're all fucking retards. However, I would just recommend to warm up, lift (hard and heavy) then do the cardio that you seek.
As long as you track your calories and you stay in surplus you can do all the cardio you want.

How do I determine the right amount of calories for me? I'm 5'8" and 160lbs

Just do the cardio AFTER you lift.
This is the only thing you should look out for.
Cardio AFTER lifting.
Don't forget to warm up before lifting tho, a quick 5m cardio should do the trick.

this. fell for the "no cardio" meme for awhile, finally started adding it back in and I feel so much better. cardio isn't gonna stop me from 1/2/3/4, my chestlet genes will
