That is completely wrong, for the record. The reason why tanner skin looks harder is because the amount of melanin in a person's skin doesn't actually change when they tan. Instead, the melanin moves to the surface. Rather than being evenly distributed throughout the thickness of the skin, it accumulates closer to the surface and the skin become less translucent. Light doesn't penetrate as deep, and creases become more defined. This is why pale skin is so attractive on girls: translucent skin looks much softer.
