>Bro approaches bench
>Sets up too much weight
>"benches", not touching chest, elbows dont even bend more than 30 degrees
Everybody hates this dude
>Powerlifter approaches bench
>Loads up shitload of weight
>arches back like a barn roof
>benches, does touch chest due to arch, but elbows bend just as little as the bro earlier
This is accepted.
Why is this, /fit/? Powerlifters have to squat to below parallel, so why do they not have to bench to 90 degree bent elbows?

Powermemers hate bench because they suck at it, so they try their hardest to cheat it.
because the chest is the only reference point that allows for accurate judging

some of them are great at it, and have a fairly minimal arch. have a lot of respect for those guys
But yeah, some of them dont seem to want to actually get a strong chest, and just "focus on technique", which revolves purely around reducing ROM to zero

>so why do they not have to bench to 90 degree bent elbows?
federations rules say nothing about minimum elbow angles. else anything goes. that's also why the grip is usually wider to decrease ROM.
also same reason why sumo deadlift is allowed.
as long as the PL federations rules allow something than anything goes.

thing with sumo is, it doesnt really seem to make someones lift stronger. sure, some people pull heavier in sumo, but others do conventional better
Point is, theyre not allowed skimp on ROM with either squat or diddlies, so why are they allowed to with bench?
Powerlifting needs to die and be replaced by the Starting Strength © Classic featuring The Press™ instead of the the (((bench))). Also equipment besides belts are banned. And there's no feedback from the judge, you either clear it or don't.
It's just some meta rule shit, they can't figure out a legit metric to get everyone to do a real bench so they have to play the arch game.
If you're not arching your shit so much that you're basically doing a 1/8 ROM decline press you're not gonna win.
If they had a better metric for benching than "it has to touch your chest and your butt can't leave the bench" they'd use it.
Benching in PL is an absolute joke as a result of this, but they already removed OHP due to such tomfoolery and removing bench would be the beginning of the end imo.

Sumo does reduce range of motion.
But it makes leverages worse for a lot of tall people.
