I lift until I can't lift a rep anymore. I'm not sore the following day. What am I doing wrong? Am I making any progress? It's been about 2 weeks, 3 days a week. I try to bench 5 x 5 but I always struggle to finish the last set and often can't. 115 lb

I only ever feel it in my ass on occasion after leg press. I make sure that my arms and other muscles don't feel tight and stretch them out. Is this why? How fast should I be making gains? about 5 weeks in.

Lifting to failure on each set is inefficient. All you do is make your form go shitty and compromise subsequent sets. As you lifting experience increases you learn to know how much to leave in the tank on each set. Focus on maintaining form and stopping when you have like 1-2 good reps remaining in the tank. You should be able to maintain consistent performance across your working sets without needing crazy rest periods. Maybe dropping 1-2 reps between sets in acceptable but if you are dropping more you are doing something wrong.

Also soreness the day after (Delayed onset muscle soreness - DOMS) is not a legitimate indicator of a sucessfful workout. A failure to be sore the next day does not mean your workout was unsuccessful. The body adapts to training and gets more efficient at recovery and dispersing lactic acid.

Barbell bench press is quite a bit more compound than a dumbbell press. Try dumbbell press / flyes if you really want the chest burn.
