Question for you /fit/.

I have just gotten into running and it's started out good but I'm coming into a problem. When I run more than a mile my arches start to really burn to the point where running is incredibly difficult. I was told I have high arches and while I bought a pad for my shoes it doesn't help enough.

Do you have any suggestions for a shoe or insole that helps with this?

You're probably just not used to running. Give it time and if it still happens after say a month (assuming you run a couple of times a week) then see a doctor. Could be a myriad of reasons.

Incidentally, when I got into running again (having run a lot as a child/teenager) I kept getting people telling me I'd fuck up my feet if I didn't buy proper running shoes. Being a stingy bastard, I looked up whether the benefits of running shoes are a myth instead. They are.

i feel like orthodontics just end up being a band aid for bad form

Hopefully that's it.

IS there a good program to follow to help build my stamina?

Barefoot runner here. Our feet have been systematically weakened from walking on what are essentially mattresses and like >>41870729 said, orthotics are only a band-aid.

I also have high arches, was told years ago that orthotics would help with pain I was having in rugby training. I ignored that advice, quit rugby, and started training my feet.

My advice is find a grass field and start walking barefoot. Maybe a minute at first and then increase as you get comfortable. Then start jogging small distances once walking gets boring (times like 10-20m), then running, then sprinting. You will have pain, but it will be DOMS from building muscle instead of pain felt during the activity. Your feet will also start to cramp a lot but that's how you know it's working.

There are a lot of videos on barefoot running form, I can also recommend some supplementary exercises if you want.

Not really, just run more. For me arch pain wasn't a huge problem until it started something was tearing. If you still have alot of arch pain a day or so after a run, you should stop regardless though.

Until you run onto a piece of broken glass from some asshole's alcoholism.

It doesn't hurt after, just during

You'll be fine. Also a rookie mistake is big steps.

I've stepped on glass barefoot before, not a big deal especially if it's in the soft grass. The two worst things I've accidentally stepped on were a cactus and a wasp.
