I've lived in both Southampton and Sheffield, went to UoSoton and currently living in Sheff. They are very relaxed cities, lots of green spaces and doesn't really have a city feel because of that. Both are close to great countryside, Sheffield is next to the peaks and dales and Southampton is a short train from New Forest. University nightlife is good if you like that type of thing. I enjoyed my time at Soton but found University wasn't for me.

I only paid 3K fees - BUT you will pay it back at a much lower rate. That is, LESS of your salary will come off every month.

In terms of time spent paying it back, let's say I earn £35k a year for the next however many years (in reality I have started lower than that, and might go higher, but for argument's sake let's just imagine £35k every year). Then it will take me 20 years to pay back my £30k debt.

For you I'm guessing your debt will be nearer £50k (£9k * 3, plus I'm guessing maybe £7k maintenance per year? So add that and you get £48k, so it's basically £50k). For you, if you also earned £35k every year for however many years, it will take you FORTY years to pay back your £50k debt (partly due to the bigger size of the debt, partly due to the slower rate of paying it back).

BUT, consider this - if you haven't paid back your whole debt within 25 years, then the rest of it gets written off. So yeah. You probably won't pay back your whole loan, and you might in fact end up paying back LESS than I do, because of the slower rate.

This is why it kind of annoys me when people bang on about students having this "debt" - it's not real debt, really. You're not going to have your house repossessed if you don't pay it back. It's more like a graduate tax, and you guys pay it back at a lower rate than I do. I mean sure, what a fantastic world it would be to get it for free - BUT somebody has to pay for uni doesn't it? And think of all the wankers that go to university to do shitty useless degrees that they never use. They just uni as a three year drinking holiday. Should hardworking taxpayers, including working class people, pay for that? Personally I think the students should pay it - I think the current "graduate tax" system is VERY fair. And it SHOULD force students to think properly about whether going to uni is a good investment for them.
