Does going to the gym have to feel terrible?
The burn from lifting to failure, or in general doing way more effort than you want feels like shit. Is this necessary to get a healthy and ok looking body?

No, sometimes you have good days and sometimes bad days. With experience you will learn to love the pain of lifting to extreme fatigue.
