First I would recommend you to read articles from Testosterone nation as well as visit the bodybuilding.com forums and reading the sticky threads. Diet is more important than exercise for weight loss.

You don't have to do everything at once, achieving a better you is made trough small steps. You also know better than anybody what your flaws are. People at the gym are only concerned about what they're doing, so people judging you and bad stuff only happens in your head and in american gyms. If you're still too shy you can start with power walking around places you know for x minutes a day. You can also add push ups, buy a pullup bar, etc. Bodyweight exercises in general.

You may want to also perform a bodyweight exercise routine to create a body worth existing in. Air squats, pushups, chinups on anything you can grip, chair dips, rows off the edge of your table - NO equipment needed. Train like a prisoner in solitary - shouldn't be too far off the mark.
