I can tread water just fine.

For some reason though, this picture reminds me of the MGS2 boss fight with Vamp, where it's some special type of water that will make you drown if you fall in, that only Vamp could swim in.

When I think of that, it becomes pretty spooky.
>>
>>41795760
As terrible as that game was, that was a cool part. I mean, the boss fight was still kinda shitty, but the concept was really neat. I think it was like extra hydrogen or something like that in the water. Knowing Kojima, there is probably some level of truth to that, so you probably could make a pool that was super hard to float in.
>>
>>41794228
Look up Delta P and stay afraid.
>>
>>41795953
>As terrible as that game was,

>>
>>41795953
Another guy but the only thing I can think of that'd make it make some sense is that bubbly water would be much less dense, so it'd be harder and harder to tread water the more gas is pumped through it.
It'd be interesting to see someone jump into a pool like that and just slip all the way to the bottom.

"On 20 July 1981, 24-year-old David Allen Kirwan from La Cañada, California, was driving through Yellowstone’s Fountain Paint Pot thermal area with his friend Ronald Ratliff and Ratliff’s dog Moosie. At about 1:00 P.M. they parked their truck to get out and take a closer look at the hot springs; Moosie escaped from the truck, ran towards nearby Celestine Pool (a thermal spring whose water temperature has been measured at over 200°), jumped in, and began yelping.

Kirwan and Ratliff rushed over to the pool to aid the terrified dog, and Kirwan’s attitude indicated he was about to go into the spring after it. According to bystanders, several people tried to warn Kirwan off by yelling at him not to jump in, but he shouted “Like hell I won’t!” back at them, took two steps into the pool, and then dove head-first into the boiling spring.

Kirwan swam out to the dog and attempted to take it to shore; he then disappeared underwater, let go of the dog, and tried to climb out of the pool. Ratliff helped pull Kirwan out of the hot spring (resulting in second-degree burns to his own feet), and another visitor led Kirwan to the sidewalk as he reportedly muttered, “That was stupid. How bad am I? That was a stupid thing I did.”

Kirwan was indeed in very bad shape. He was blind, and when another park visitor tried to remove one of his shoes, his skin (which was already peeling everywhere) came off with it. He sustained third-degree burns to 100% of his body, including his head, and died the following morning at a Salt Lake City hospital."

Water is one of the best absorbers of radiation possible. As long as it isn't leaking radioactive pieces of material into the water, you can be a couple feet away from a nuclear fuel rod and be getting less of a radiation dose than you get from walking outside on a sunny day.

Does anyone else ever have dreams that you can breath underwater? Usually it starts out with my going underwater and trying to hold my breath for as long as I can, until it actually hurts (not sure if I'm holding my breath in reality or if it's all in my mind) and then I start to breathe and it feels good. Usually when this happens it'll go on for what feels like a few minutes and then suddenly I realize "Wait I can't breathe underwater," and I can start lucid dreaming which is pretty cool.
This does kind of freak me out though because I work as a lifeguard and spend a lot of time in the water so I don't want to somehow freak out in real life and think that I can start breathing.

Basically you're going into boiling sulfur in the Yellowstone hot springs. Also keep in mind that at over 9000ft elevation, the boiling temperature is 195F instead of 212F (the surface doesn't have to be bubbling/roiling to be at a boil). So now you're taking a dip in superboiling sulfuric water and you'll be dissolved in a few minutes

Not really superboiling?
The boiling temperature is lower at that attitude so water will boil at a lower temperature. Which does nothing to change how badly you are burned.
>>
When you are diving and suddenly some giant pillar, or dirty and gooey rope heading down to the bottom appears, man, my brain freezes in horror. I also do fear of dark waters.. When you swim too far from shore and the bottom gets that dark-green color. When i dive a little and take a look around and see that vast dark void i always freeze, get goosebumps and try not to panic, turn on turbo swimming mode to the beach and get ready for a sudden death from behind caused by the sea itself.

When I was older I found out they can suction your swim suit in and hold you there while you drown.

Oh man this is giving me fond spooky memories of an old game called Hydro Thunder, espeically the Nile Adventure track. There were so many claustrophobic moments in that game and given the fact you are racing you get every new fear coming right at you before you can adjust. I was NOT prepared for that loooong fall into the pool with the monster in it. I was so freaked out but I couldn't stop so I boosted the fuck out of there.

The ocean is terrifying, but I also would like to die in it someday, anyone else share this feel?

If I ever have a consistent resolve to kill myself - and am not too depressed to take an elaborate way out - I think I'd sell my things, get a little sailboat, go seek some giant whales, then jump in (and probably faint immediately and drown). Just imagining being next to something so massive, underwater at that, is insane

I think it's because seeing man made shit underwater reminds your subconscious of failure and pending doom. Like how, when a ship is sunken, something has obviously gone terribly wrong. It's the same reason that all living creatures are scared of dead bodies of their own species. When you see something human underwater, you think, "oh shit, that should be there, what has gone wrong?!"

>>
>>41802928

I understand what you are saying but wouldn't that imply we pass our memories down through genes?

It would seem much more likely that human societies in development would simply morph together localized predators to tell good stories.

"The teeth of wolf! The Wings of a Hawk! The Scales of a Lizard!"

It just seems a whole lot more plausible than

>dude we were little fishies bajillions of years ago and we pass down memories through our genes

I think its just a combination of so many things we can really just contribute it to situational anxiety

>Water is cold, we need to preserve heat
>Deep water, we need oxygen
>Size difference, we feel small and defenseless
>Unfamiliar environment, there could be unknown threats we may not be able to outswim or fight off, bodies screaming for us to leave
>Darkness/unknown, their could be hidden threats, bodies screaming for us to leave
>sunken mega structures, our minds associate these with colossal failures, something went wrong, perhaps many people died, a great human effort went wrong

Ancestral?

>As sea creatures millions of years ago we developed instinctual fears that we may still carry today as a fragment from a lost/no longer necessary way of life
>Perhaps someone in your genetic line on the way up had an incident where they were attacked by a shark, fish or generic water animal and it created a memory in the genetic code to attempt to preserve itself? Similar to the apes that didn't jolt awake when they felt themselves falling out of a tree ended up dying off and thats why modern humans when dreaming about falling jolt awake

Really makes you think.
>>
>>41803049

My dad always told me that ancient cultures came up with Dragons as a way to explain dinosaur bones.
>>
>>41802062
Hmm, I have not ever felt this way, but I can imagine why you could feel the attractiveness of it. It is such a massive entity, the whole entire ocean, that even its tiny parts like whales and kelp forests are so massive, that you at least feel like you're dying in the embrace of something unimaginably massive and strangely warm. This is an illusion, of course, but I can understand it.

>Incident 2
>A diver was repairing a pool bottom at a depth of 10ft.. His body sucked against the pool drain he was unable to extricate himself. He had no handler at the surface and no one knew of his location. He was trapped against the pool until he ran out of air and died.
>Incident 4
>A surface supplied diver is assisting the use of a drill string to remove a trash cap at a well re-entry project. As the trash cap is removed suction builds up and the diver's leg is dragged into the small hole up to the pelvis. He is killed - but presumably not by suffocation since surface supplied divers have continuous air supply.
>Incident 5
>A diver is instructed to repair leaks in a dam gate valve. He is informed by dam staff that the valve is shut. He surfaces, concerned that the it is still slightly open. Assured that the valve is sealed he re-enters the water. Moments later he begins to scream. The diver no longer responds to his supervisor over the intercom. The tender and supervisor withdraw his lifeline, it has broken from the attach point. The diver's body is recovered 12 hours later.
How horrifying.

Subsequent investigation by forensic pathologists determined Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient and in the process of moving to secure the inner door, was forced through the 60 centimetres (24 in) in diameter opening created by the jammed interior trunk door by escaping air and violently dismembered, including bisection of the thoracoabdominal cavity which further resulted in expulsion of all internal organs of the chest and abdomen except the trachea and a section of small intestine and of the thoracic spine and projecting them some distance, one section later being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.

Buoyancy control. It's what lets divers be able to float in the water without sinking or rising. Because of various forces (that I don't feel like explaining), how much you weigh in the water changes depending on depth. Your BC is basically an air pocket you can inflate and deflate as needed

Most divers wear a weight vest to help them sink with 0 air in the BC. Helps to manage a neutral buoyancy. So, you inflate your BC a bunch for when you first jump in so you float to the surface to system check. Apparently the guy in >>41801739 forgot to inflate and panicked when he sank, drowning in the process

I really don't get that phobia of man made stuff underwater. For me it's pretty much the opposite. Staying out in the open would be the most anxiety inducing shit ever. Having something to cover your ass and to fight around in low visiblity enviroment is godsent. If I ever did diving near oil rig I'd never leave the pillars.

No amount of muscle will protect me from predator suited to hunting underwater. You are completely helpless, struggling to find safety, until you get tired out and killed.

That being said, fuck murky water in general. can't see what's around your feet, only the slimy bottom bog or plants touching your feet.
Fuck mates, feeling awful just thinking about this.
