I read somewhere that weightlifting (bench press/deadlifts/squats/etc.) to the point where you're sweating and panting like a motherfucker is **better** for fat loss than running. True or bullshit?

Yes, anabolic circuit training is better than cardio. It's called Exercise-Post-Oxygen-Consumption (EPOC). It means that your muscles continue to consume oxygen during the rest period after a lifting workout, which is another way of saying "lifting spikes your metabolism".

For optimal fat loss you should lift. Cardio is a meme until you drop down to a low bodyfat. Then cardio can help you. If you're fat or skinnyfat, you need to lift while eating at maintenance or slight cut (no bulking when you're "fat").

Once you're at a healthy bodyfat, you can either choose to bulk (slight increase of calories leading to slight increase in both fat and muscle (but having a low %bf when you start means you can make better gains) or go on a true cut plus cardio to get down to visible abs, while only lifting for maintenance.
