I think it makes up for not squatting, at least a little bit. I can squat 250 for 10, but squat can be irritating to my lower back sometimes, so I do leg press for volume and occasionally squat for strength.

if your goal is size then yes, you can get big juicy legs from leg press
if you only care about isolating and growing the big muscle groups so you look big and strong then leg pressing is fine. if you care about being actually strong and athletic then you need to squat as it trains a shit ton of smaller muscle groups that aren't involved in a leg press.
