Can I make pull ups easier by having a counterweights over the bar that goes down when I pull myself up?

There's a machine like that in my gym, not with cables though. You add the amount of weight you wish to substract from your bodyweight, and stand on a smaller platform to do the pullups.
You should probably look around other gyms if there's one around your area.

What worked for me was doing horizontal body rows. Had to start feet on floor, knees bent and apart. Then knees bent, feet together. Then straighten legs 50% and spread feet. Then feet together. Then knees straight, feet apart. Then feet together. Then elevated on a box. Eventually I was doing them with one leg hovering outside the box. Then I went and did one neutral grip pullup, huge accomplishment. After that, every time I do as many pullups as I can (for a long time, it was one), I would do as many slow negatives as I could to finish the set. In fact, I still finish every set of pullups with negatives.
