Dips don't give me any problems. I'm not too bothered about a potentially underdeveloped chest – big shoulders look better than a big chest.

Anon, do what you can do reach your goals. If you hate benching, and have shoulder pain, then just do other exercises you enjoy more.
May it set you back a little? Possibly. May it prevent injuries? Possibly. You are not obliged to bench just because some asshat here thinks the world of it.
