How were ancient Greeks so ripped and aesthetic? These statues weren't depiction of Gods. They were ordinary men so it wasn't something to strive to become as if they were Gods.

They didn't have dumbells or barbells neither did they have steroids or supplements. What gives?

>>
lmao he looks like shit

live a life of manual labor, as in, to do anything you have to manually work for it. eat a very clean diet. do calisthenic a lot because there's fucking nothing else to do but work and sleep. run a lot because how the fuck else you gunna get anywhere. have test levels not fucked over by the post industrial world. and they did have workout equipment. carving rocks to have handles as sort of cave-man kettle balls was common because stone working tools were common and big fucking heavy rocks were even more common.
>>
Keep in mind that eating habits and the foods available were very different, so everyone except rich fucks were probably super low bf anyway. Then add the near constant training that warriors went through, and you have a recipe for a shredded aesthetic motherfucker.

I mean shit, your average Hoplite had heavy armor, a big-ass round shield and a big spear. Constantly hefting those in a combat stance for Phalanx formations would be one helluva workout. Its not super far-fetched to think that theyd be pretty shredded if thats pretty much all they're doing.

In Sparta, boys went to military school at age 4.

In Athens, every man spent 3 hours at the gymnasium daily, working out in the nude. They ate a lot of goat cheese. It wasn't a choice, it was actually a part of their religion to work out.

Your penile insecurity/ fixation/ porn brainwashing is showing.

A.) Penises this size are normal, especially when exposed to the elements or when exercising due to blood flow being away from the genitals. Also life was more traumatic back then which produced more cortisol in the bloodstream which has a tendency to inhibit hormonal development in puberty.

B.) The lack of emphasis on the genitals and more on the cranium was to emphasize the virtue of logic over base passions.

Less recreational 4chan, more studying, padiwan.

>>41538523
This is one of the Riace bronzes, which were made in the early to mid classical period. It almost certainly depicts a guy of aristocratic background. Even though what the other anon is saying about most Greeks only fighting part time at least in later periods, depending on the city/area, an aristocrat from the late archaic to mid classical period was more or less a professional soldier who lived a life of relative ease with ample free time for training, which would have been the centre of both his social and political life. These were also the ranks from which Olympians were almost exclusively drawn at the time. This guy grew up in a system that championed both physical performance and male physical beauty, and would have been encouraged to aim for that ideal from a very early age. Many of his contemporaries who weren't as gifted or dedicated probably didn't end up looking like this.

One more thing worth considering: If you saw this statue in real life, you'd be struck both by how lifelike it is (the diver who discovered it I think was convinced he'd found a corpse) and by how menacing its physicality is. These sculptures are from a world and culture that was steeped in violence, and sculptures like this show it very clearly. This guy was at the pinnacle like this for his time because he was dedicated to physicality because survival and social position - as well as education - depended largely on being at least a little thuggish.
>>
>>41538523
Holy fuck did anyone in here even graduate HS? They didn't actually look that lean you fucking morons. The sculptor exaggerated their feature you fucking retarded-ass niggers.
>>
>>41539673
That's only true of figures like Hercules and other gods, whose musculature was exaggerated by sculptures who wanted them to literally look superhuman. Actual athletes are depicted fairly realistically. They even rubbed oil all over themselves during contests in order to accentuate their features (sound familiar?). The guys being immortalised in athletic nudes are not average members of society, they're literal Olympic champions and top-flight war heroes.

>>
>>41539578
This.
>citizen-soldiers
Importantly, this meant that it was every man's duty to keep himself fit and ready for war. So there was considerable social pressure to be fit. There was no 'body positivity' or even 'body ambivalence' because having a shit body showed that you were a shit man.
>>
>>41539703
You are right, but
>>41539660
And
>>41539829
Are also right. In short: the statues ARE from Olympic champions (and other best-of-the-best; plus their mental image of gods is clearly drawn from idealising humans, just like Michelangelo), but these best were drawn out of an aristocrat & citizen (depending on city) class that put HEAVY emphasis on the body. Greeks were PHYSICAL. School was basically sports with a little rhetoric. They believed in an afterlife and some kind of spirit, but this didn't get much emphasis until Plato and especially St Paul. In Homer's time most of the dead were to be pitied, even the glorious dead merely respected and commemorated; the emphasis was on this physical finite life.

I don't mean to idealize. Compared to our world or even peak Rome the Greek world was shit: bunch of narrow minded hicks squabbling, murdering, and bribing each other. But damn did they get some good art, poetry, thinking, science, and living in while they were at it.

Also fucking ass is AMAZING, even if I prefer women's asses.

How are the modern Japanese so 可愛い and 萌え? These figures aren't depiction of 2次元嫁. They are ordinary girls so it's not something to strive to become as if they were 2次元嫁.
>>
Artists have always chosen to draw idealized versions of men and women, hence why in all greek sculptures you'll see muscular men with tiny penises because that's what they considered beautiful.

Just look at all the renaissance paintings depicting females, do you think all women back then had perfect pale skin and enough to eat as to be overweight? Hell no, most would be rather scrawny and tan, working in the fields.
>>
>>41539460
>>41539631

Greek artists would purposefully sculpt penises smaller, smoother, always flaccid and with less hair. It was seen as "proper" and intellectual.

Men were only depicted with massive schlongs if they were supposed to be barbaric, uncultured and filthy.

Tiny penises were only present in greek / roman culture I'd say.
>>
>>41539460

I'm Greek and my flaccid penis isn't far off the ones seen on statues. I'm also 7.5 inches when erect.

Perhaps the usual explanation of bigger dicks being seen as barbaric isn't all there is to this and there's something in our genetics.

They were both. The Greeks of that time were mostly either laborers/farmers, in which case they worked out all day, or citizens, in which they trained for a few hours every day. In general, their populace would have looked fit as fuck compared to the people of today.

Hell, even fifty years ago, people were way fucking skinnier, but that was after widespread service economies, after guns, and after private armies. The average Greek citizen probably looked a metric fuck ton fitter than the average walmart shopper.

Except that a lot of Greek statues are anatomically impossible.

The addition of muscle groups that dont exist and insertions that are impossible are clearly signs that they were artwork based in a idealised view of beauty. Just look at the adonis belts on the bronzes, they're massively exaggerated.

I'm not making any comment about the physical fitness of Greeks, that's separate from the cultural significance of their art.

She looks around 30% bodyfat, most women in these paintings were pretty soft, hovering between normal and overweight.

>>41540742
In the Renaissance artists started to become more realistic, with anatomy studies and perspective. While I enjoy Michelangelo's work he was terrible at drawing women. I couldn't find much about wether female models were banned or not but I doubt so, as the church relaxed their grip and now artists could be commissioned mythological (and not only biblical) scenes such as nude godesses, nymphs, etc. Back then nobody would have paid you if you did ugly female nudes. Female beauty was pale skin, long hair and a certain plumpness which showed the woman had status and wealth, unlike peasants, hence why most look overweight, not masculine.

Michelangelo is just a terrible exception lol

I was just going to say this. In particular, a lot of the statues are flexing in a manner that humans physically cannot do. For example a number of the Riace Bronzes (of which OP's pic is part of) have the statues flexing both their backs and their pecs at the same time, not to mention their arms, legs, and torsos are far too long. The muscles along the Riace Bronzes' lower backs also don't exist (OPs picture isn't a good example of this, there's a vid on youtube about it though). Additionally, the grooves of the statues' abs and along his spine are inhumanly deep.

If you want an example of what I'm talking about as far as his proportions being odd, here one of the Riace's is after being removed from the Mediterranean.

They did the classic Pentathlon and nothing else, pretty much. Wikipedia that.

>They didn't look like that and that's a fact
Nah they probably did.

Once upon a time, I took it on me to use photoshop to measure the statues and their circumferences like chest, abs, biceps, etc.

Turns out they aren't really unrealistically built. In fact, most modern lifter are more muscular (but then again, modern lifters couldn't throw a javelin for 200 meters, the Greeks could, according to Seneca).
>>
>>41539673
This. Many Greeks were certainly ripped, but the sculptors exaggerated their rippedness, in the same way that almost all kings and queens in the middle ages were painted as beautiful - they usually weren't all that, but you're not gonna depict your employer as ugly.

These statues exaggerate their fitness. I'm not saying that ZERO greeks looked liked this, but very few did and it's almost certain that whoever commissioned this particular one was not.

The vast majority of the time, when they wanted to buy a statue, you would go to a sculptor and he would show you a bunch of headless bodies and you would pick the one you wanted most and he'd sculpt a head for it and fuse it on. That's why you have a lot of statues (both greek and roman) that broke off cleanly like pic related, because the glue didn't last.

Just read about Ancient Greek aesthetics by ancient Greeks. They go on about penises entirely too much. It's hilarious. And that anon is correct.

They've done studies on the depth of grooves in the bones of famous athletes and what not, and by measuring such things they were able to determine that they were as strong as the best athletes of today. They were citizen-soldiers, and probably fairly ripped in general, with the most ripped ones looking like the pre-steroids strongmen of the last century. But yes, they were generally manlets.
