Is there a program like Starting Strength for doing the splits? I've been winging it but I don't really know what I'm doing.
good question. I would like to be able to do the van damme splits as well.
Starting stretch? Starting split? I believe it's in the sticky, haven't looked at that thing in almost a decade

Figure out what muscles are stretched the most by the stretch you want to do and find stretches that hit them.
Then when you go to do a split, identify what muscles are tightest / resisting the most and stretch those individually, before attempting it again.
Then just repeat at least once a day, to multiple times a day, until you attain the flexibility / split depth that you want.

For box splits we used to sit on the position known in yoga as the butterfly. You'll sometimes see people use their hands to keep their feet together but that's bad for you. If you do anything with your hands push against your thighs. As you push your thigh into the ground try to push your thighs in against the hand, then relax. Also try to bring your heels in to your crotch.
Then you straighten one leg out. You can lean forward and smother your bent leg with your torso and jam your elbow into the straight leg to push it out. Alternate legs.
Then both legs as far apart as poss. Roll your hips over to try to straigten them out.

Yeah that's pretty solid, just heed my warning about butterfly position here.

Even just sitting in butterfly for ages helps immensely.

It'll come back quick enough.
I'd recommend having a look at Tsatsouline's stretch books if you have a chance. He has some good general advice in there and it's pretty damn close to a full starting stretch program.
