There were/are a lot of lean strongmen. Before 2009 most of the successful ones were leaner and lighter. It's not genetics, although response to drugs does play a part. It's that in the past the events were more athletic and there were fewer dedicated pure strongmen. Now, all of the top strongmen train purely as strongmen and the events prioritise strength and weight over speed and distance. So they are heavier and much stronger than past athletes.

This. Cultural shift in the sport changed what made strongmen successful. Compare it to bodybuilding. If someone like Arnold or Zane competed today they'd be outclassed because pure muscle mass matters more these days than a proportional aesthetic physique.

Hafthor stays fairly lean too. Not as lean as MP did, but generally still has visible abs even if he has bloat face.
