There is no downside to lift to get as strong as possible. Granted, if you get fat and immobile while doing it, that's not good. But unless you want to run marathons, more strength and muscle mass is never a disadvantage.

The "natty limit" around 10-15% bodyfat (strength training, not fluff-and-puff "hypertrophy") is probably about as functional as you can be.
Obviously there are other things you need to do as well besides lifting, like calisthenics, stretching, cardio... - if you want to be all-round functional. But to say "lifting is useless" is just bullshit.

The stronger you are, the more sub-maximal (and thus, less demanding, less fatiguing, less injury-prone) everyday things become.
If I can deadlift 4-5 plates with good form in a gym environment, I can easily lift something that's 100kg outside the gym - which would fuck up most other people.

And if "what is impressive" is a deciding factor, you need to grow the fuck up, kiddo.
