Noob lifter here.
I am experiencing discomfort in my upper back / lower neck when squatting. I've tried with and without padding and I am fairly sure my technique is OK.
Are there any other things I can do to remedy the situation? Can I switch squats for leg press?

Feels like a kind of pulling sensation between the vertebrae. I feel it the most after I rack the bar.

Considering I don't even squat 1 plate and started with just the bar, I think yes.

no it's not, squats are nothing like leg press
that's like saying if it is OK to switch bench press for sprints.
