Tell me why it's silly to be afraid of the gym. All the people there scare me.

You're welcome.

They're too busy worrying about themselves to even notice you. This can also be said for almost all social situations

My gym has one bench and one squat rack. I most certainly bet that they will notice me because they want to use it for themselves.

In that case, make friends with the people who go there, convince an existing friend to go with you, or go to a different gym

This. If people want to use the rack they'll queue for it while you're still using it. It's a good opportunity to talk to them between sets. Particularly useful for getting advice from more experienced people.
If you talk you'll find out they arnt so bad.

Because all the people there were once like you
Because newbies, so long as they're not complete fucking idiots and misusing equipment, are generally welcomed because they're genuinely trying to make a change
Because as >>40673477 said, the world doesn't revolve around you. Everyone there is working on themselves

Pretty much this. I used to be scared of the gym until I realised the big dudes there respect you if you're going regularly. Doesn't matter how big you are if you're committed to it they're gonna like you. Probably compliment you when you start growing as well.

No one gives a shit about you. Anyone giving you shit or funny looks is a fucking dumb cunt and should either be told to soundly fuck off or be ignored.
This goes for clubbing, parties and dance floors too in some cases
I injured myself and about to get a surgery and be out of work for a year. Lifting helped me find out about my injury thank God.

Reality isn't that kind.
