What would I need to do to get /fit/ at home? I don't

first of all you haven't specified what you want to get out of the gym.

you're really shooting yourself in the foot by not joining a gym. gym equipment is by far the most useful way to get in shape. here is a list of the best ways to get in shape, in order:

>join a well equipped gym
>buy an olympic barbell and dumbbells with 200kg+ of weight, build/buy a squat rack and bench and install a pull up bar
>get as much of the above as you can fit in your living space
>do bodyweight exercises if none of the above is an option

check out reddit's bodyweightfitness page for more details, or the bodyweight general floating around just now.

also, read the sticky for general info, there's good iet info in there

a final word of warning - the gains you will see doing bodyweght exercises vs lifting weights will be very limited and very slow. likely, 6 monhs of lifting will give you the same results as 3 years of bodyweight exercises.

of course, this advice is limited, because you haven't said what your goals are.

so you want more upper body mass and size.

ok, the difference is this: hypertrophy is much easier to attain via weight training than it is via bodyweight training. if you take the bw approach, you are limited in what your body can actually do. it may take you years to build the strength necessary to perfrom the movements which will be most useful to you. plus, you are stuck with one constant weight (your body) which is invariable and cannot be altered to your benefit.

weight training allows you to perform a great many more movements through more complete and accessible ranges of motion to provide growth, with alterable weights, which means you can train within optimal rep ranges for size (6-12). some of the guys in the olympics who are master gymnasts look worse than a guy with 2-3 years lifting experience.

anyway, the main determinant in size is your diet. you can have an absolute pristine training program, best trainers in the world, train with the most intensity and dedication, but unless you are eating enough, you will not get what you want, if what you want is more size and mass.

that's the basics. if you want to do bw to get big, prepare to either be disappointed or to spend some seriously difficult years achieving what you could have done in a year in the gym. after a while, you'll probabl wish you went to the gym if you hadn't already given up.

like i said though, you could buy your own equipment and train optimally at home
