I've gotten the same with my gf about:

-losing bodyfat
-gaining mucle
-growing a beard
-shaving my head
-choice of cologne
-choice of wardrobe

I think there's two reasons. Firstly, a woman wants a good man but not a TOO good one, since she may lose him. This is why surveys have women "prefering" dadbods over Chads; it's not an actual preference, but a realistic assessement of what they can achive and keep.

Secondly, women (and people in general) sometimes respond to anyone's announcement that they wish to change with some kind of statement that they don't have to or shouldn't; this is just a nice thing to say, and responding to someone wanting to e.g. lose weight with "yeah you totally should" might be taken as dickish.
