I've worked since I was 15, full-time through college. The only exceptions were 2 periods of brief unemployment (8 weeks & 9 weeks); the first time the new jobs couldn't start me immediately, the second after a move when my new job fell through.

I've met quite a few conservatives that aren't like how my father raised me. They lose their job and stay unemployed for years. They get hurt in a minor way, they make it worse by going back to a job that's too physical for them. They refuse to retrain or switch fields. All this leads to a bunch of men at home, getting fatter on the dole, with cranky fat women.

I also don't consider it a coincidence that these areas tend to go for the Bible trumps a HS education. If you can't count to 21 without taking you shoes & pants off, you're too dumb to work these days

To be fair the US Public school system is godawful at teaching anything relevant to Diet or Healthcare. I'm pretty sure the only thing most kids learn is the bullshit 'Food Pyramid' which is pretty much propaganda from the US Department of Agriculture trick families into buying more grains.

On top of that, while you can buy food for cheap at grocery stores, being poor often leaves the average joe with little time or energy to prepare real meals.

Pedro working at the construction yard all day doesn't want to drive to the grocery store, drive home, and spend half an hour preparing a meal. Instead he could feed his whole family by sitting in a drive thru for 5 min.

We are at a point in society where this lifestyle is a norm being passed down from generation to generation. Mothers get fast food for their children, who'll grow up to do the same for their kids. Since it's become 'normalized' there is less societal incentive for people to change their lifestyles.
