Is there any point of basic strength you should achieve before going into specific hypertrophy training? I was injured late in 2015, couldn't really do much lifting in 2016, and just got back into it a month ago. I'm weak as fuark and doing GSLP. Most recent lifts (in the 5, 5, 5+ rep scheme) are:

OHP 42.5kg x 5, 5, 14

Bench 62.5 x 5, 5, 12

Squat 70 x 5, 5, 21

Deadlift 130 x 13

I figure I might as well milk linear progression as much as possible. My best 5 rep sets ever pre-injury were OHP 66kg, bench 99kg, squat 122.5kg, and dead 172.5kg.

Right now it just feels like I'm way too weak for a hypertrophy split. Am I wrong?

Squat increased dramatically, from 225/4 reps to 230/8 reps, and then 250/6 reps.

I got into a bad moto accident about 5 months ago and fucked up my shoulder, lost like 40 pounds went down to 140. Started lifting as soon as the doc gave the ok, was only able to start with the bar on almost any excercise and wasn't allowed to do ohp until start of January.

Should I cut or bulk? I really don't want to get fat though.


So I've been doing SS for the past week and a half or so. Haven't been able to hit 3000 calories in a day once though, and I generally only get just about a bit over 100g of protein per day.
Highest I can squat so far has been 90 lbs.
Bench press is only 55 lbs though but I also can't get the form right, my worst keep hurting and my chest doesn't do any work.
Can do like 1-2 chinups before I'm maxed out.

Anyway, someone give me tips or advice or something please.

Do push-ups every time you use the bathroom do about 5-10. When that gets too easy start doing diamond pushups. For chinups do the negative, so jump up and control your descent, it should take you about 5 seconds to go from chin above bar to dead hang. Go back to full chin ups when you can do a set of 10 negatives. Both of those will make you sore as fuck when you start but over time it will be a lot easier and will make you stronger. Try doing db press instead of BB until you can get your form down.

Always try to feel you know, some 'burn' in whatever you are targeting, like if your abs are sore, then they've been trained.

Bulked for a year, happy with progress, have been cutting for a month down from ~180 to 168. Not trying to cut that fast but I'm assuming the first 10 lbs are easiest?

Oh for sure on SS I got stronger but I quit that after a month once I realized that it wouldn't fix my imbalances. I made really good noob gains doing hypertrophy PPL and a PHUL, just always felt bad cause my stats were so shit.

During my current cut I do 3 full body 2 hour workouts a week, focusing on hypertrophy but still at the heaviest weight I can manage. I do cardio on the other days (basketball). SO you're hitting full body 3 times a week, if you have the free time, you could maybe try some kind of upper/lower 6 day split like what I do.

The stuff that is trained every day from compounds (forearms, abs) is the muscles that you can train every day.

That stuff that is trained every other day (chest, quads, glutes), well, there is one day of 'rest' where your not training that muscle, since it's upper/lower

I really like upper lower, a brosplit, you only train the muscles 2x a week, this way, it's like a full body where you train muscles 3x a week, except you can spend more time training your upper and lower body, since you're in the gym for longer.

End of the day, if you're doing something and it works, just keep doing it.

That's the real test,

I've kind of given up on numbers for now. Strength is relative to where you started and my bench is 125 lbs heavier than what it was so I'm happy with that. I think I'll stick with the 3 day a week till march and then move to a 4-5 day split. It's tough for me to get to the gym 5 days a week but I think focusing on one part of upper instead of having to do upper and lower on the same day would be beneficial. And you're honestly right about the mcdonalds shit. When I bulked I ate as much as I could including fast food often. It worked and I skyrocketed out of skelly mode and made gains but it caught up with me. After like 6 months I had too much fat to continue bulking like I wanted to so I kind of stagnated due to self confidence reasons. I would have made better overall gains lean bulking for a year but hey, live and learn. It was still fun. We're all gonna make it. Don't worry about cutting for at least a few years man. You really need to bulk. That's not to say eat shit, but eat as much as you can, as cleanly as you can, and lift heavy shit. You may gain some fat, but the pay off will be worth it.

Also, don't focus so much on your weight or your looks or your bodyfat or any of that shit. Focus on improving key lifts like squats, deads, bench, pullups. If you eat and improve these the rest will follow.
