what's the gritty on saturated fat?
the guide linked in the sticky said there's no clear consensus whether it's good or bad
do we have a conclusion on it yet?

Arterial plaque is bad, cholesterol and saturated fat are strong precursors to that.

coconut oil is saturaed fat. tribes that have 70% of theyre calories from coconut have literally NO heartdisease whatsoever.

No 3 oz isn't much at all. Especially if it's high quality stuff. Like grass fed cows will lead to a cheese high in Omega 3 fatty acids.

Studies have shown that an increased intake of saturated fats leads to increased levels of LDLs (low-density lipoproteins, or "bad" cholesterol). The exact mechanism of this is unknown, as is the exact extent. However, you should try and limit your intake, and current AHA guidelines recommend limiting saturated fats to no more than 10% of total daily caloric intake.

So, they're not great, but it's not exactly poison either. Try to keep an eye out for 'em and you'll be fine.

what are you talking about?
the point of this thread was i was reading the sticky and it said that there was no consensus, so i'm asking is there a consensus yet
and after a bit of googling, it seems there still isn't
so please elaborate about this scientific consensus of yours when 25% of articles are saying saturateds are good, 25% are saying they're bad, and 50% say idk

I think the studies provide more evidence than the theorists trying to disprove them.

On a biochemical level, I think the notion that saturated fats are less desirable is pretty straightforward (note: gross oversimplification incoming). "Saturated" means that the fat chain is literally saturated with hydrogen atoms, ie there are no double-bonds present. Double-bonds add "bends" to otherwise straight fatty-acid chains, and thereby cause physical separation between them. When you stack numerous fatty acids side-by-side, the less double-bonds there are, the more rigid and solid the resulting membrane is. You want some fluidity present, otherwise you're at higher risk of arterial plaques and other problems. This (generally speaking) is why you very rarely find saturated fats in nature at all; they're simply not as desirable. However, that's not to say that you need to avoid saturated fats like the plague; again, go back to that "<10% caloric intake rule."

Getting back to your point, though. It's no real secret that the sugar industry tried to push the "fats are the bad guy" agenda in order to get people to eat more sugar. But that doesn't mean that recent evidence showing that saturated fats are less healthy than unsaturated fats is invalid.

It's hard these days to determine the validity of research, when science is becoming ever more entwined with politics. Skepticism is good, but if you start ignoring scientific evidence outright, you get issues like "morbidly obese people are actually healthy!" and "climate change isn't real!" and "vaccines are poison!" There's a fine line between skepticism and outright denial.

You just have to put some trust in people who know more than you (and that goes just as much for me as for anyone else here). Sure, sometimes that trust gets betrayed. That's part of life on Earth. But for the most part, taking the advice of the more knowledgeable/experienced is going to help you in the long run.
>>
>>40241679
you must not have googled very hard then

literally from wikipedia:
Many health authorities such as the American Dietetic Association,[23] the British Diebetic Association,[24] American Heart Association,[25] the World Heart Federation,[26] the British National Health Service,[27] among others,[28][29] advise that saturated fat is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization in May 2015 recommends switching from saturated to unsaturated fats.[30]

beyond that, though, i will cut my fucking nuts off if 25% of genuine, peer-reviewed publications regarding saturated fats consider them to be *good.* if you did some actual reading, you'd find that it's just a matter of how-not-bad they are. almost every source i've seen indicates that they definitely do cause a rise in blood cholesterol. it's just that some argue that there's no link between that rise in cholesterol and mortality, which is just bullshit numbers-fudging in small-pop studies.
>>
>>40241886
to your last point that's how i ended up on the pro saturated side in the first place
putting trust into a guy who pro athletes come to for diet advice
i get your point that these scientists in turn are more knowledgable than joe is, but there are scientists on the pro saturated side as well, not just skeptics, scientists.
i still don't know where to stand desu
you said a whole lot of science shit that made a whole lot of sense for why saturateds are bad, but i don't really fuckin know what any of that shit meant.
i'm a google search away from a whole lot of science shit that says it's good and would be just as convincing to me
what do you think of this idea doc
i go to the doctors and do a full check up to make sure i'm healthy
then i go ham on saturated fats and get a full check up at the doctors every half year.
if they detect anything i cut the saturateds out and we see if anything changes
yay or nay
>>
just avoid processed fats. stick to coconut avocado nuts seeds organic grassfed butter.
>>
>>40242004
>you must not have googled very hard
>literally from wikipedia
lol
but i see your point

and when i say good i just mean harmless at the least, and i don't know what the actual percentages are, the point i was making is from what i've seen the majority seems to say results are inconclusive, and the rest is roughly split down the middle

to your last point i've never heard of this
i'll look into it
>>
>>40242164
That's a fair view, honestly. Like I said, it's tough to know what the right answer is.

I think your idea is fine, and as long as you're getting routine evaluations and good reports from your family doc, I think you'll be okay.

But speaking on a personal level, keep the saturated's in moderation, please. Everything in life is about moderation. And your blood tests and evaluations may not show abnormalities, but that doesn't mean you don't have small changes in your cells and blood vessels that add up in the long run. Sure, you may not die at fifty, but it could mean you're one of those 80-year old stroke victims drooling on yourself in a nursing home, rather than one of those 80-year-olds making the young punks look bad as you power-walk around the neighborhood in uncomfortably short shorts.

Just try to keep that in mind, listen to your doctor, and you'll do fine.
>>
>>40242358
>everything in life is about moderation
It's common sense that when you plateau you add more roids.

Fuck moderation.

This is why you have no gainz.
>>
>>40242358
>ok it's fine, but here's why it's not fine
sound advice doc
really speaks to the theme of the thread

it seems to me the smart thing to do would be as you say, take it in moderation, and if science ever comes to a consensus, then i can adjust or not adjust accordingly at that point
it's just really hard to think that way when i'm going to be listening to joe rogan talk about eating sticks of butter for breakfast, and how 95% of cucks are brainwashed by the sugar industry
how is that guy so certain when there is so much uncertainty.
what does he know that i don't?
i think that's the real question here
