Are personal trainers in gyms actually good for getting healthier and stronger? I can only count on one hand the amount of times I have seen one coach a newbie on one of the core staple barbell lifts.

People want to do the shit they see in fitness magazines and pro athlete training centers. Personal trainers are mostly just there to fill that market.
the personal trainer at your average gym is going to be hustling you and selling you snake-oil products, like they've been trained to do
a good coach from an olympic weightlifting gym or a strength coach that works with college level athletes can definitely be worth it though

I've never seen a PT ever do any core barbell work with anyone, ever, in almost 2 years.

if you want to change, you either have the drive to do it yourself or you don't have the drive to do it at all. if you have a trainer and are making progress, it means you have the drive to do it on your own and are wasting money since you're doing most of the work anyway

Yes, but only for certain people. If you like being held accountable to someone else or are easily pushed by others or you're a complete noob or idiot then you'll move faster with a trainer
As with anything, it's cheaper and often better to do it yourself but it has its benefits for the right people
