Is it impossible to build strength using a machine/calisthenics? I live in Japan, and my local gym doesn't even have lifting plates.

Do calisthenics untill you find a better gym
Strength in terms of your barbell/dumbbell strength, yeah.
Strength in terms of moving weight on the machine? No.
You can still build a good physique with machines, although the weights cap out pretty fast and its hard to continue overloading. But then again you're a Japanese person so your have equivalent strength/muscle potential of western females so it wont even be an issue.
You can get pretty big with callisthenics, but you need to do difficult movements that take a lot of time to perfect.

>But then again you're a Japanese person
How naive. Don't want to go all /pol/ on you but there's people who "flee" to Japan.
>Go to your not local gym
<Problem fixed

In any case weightlifting is dominated by Asians and Japan has extremely good gymnasts.

99% of people in Japan posting on 4chan are white guys.
The few Japs that have actually posted on 4chan universally have bad English, no exceptions.
