Buy plates used and never pay more than $1/lb. Also never buy 35 lb. plates, they're a complete waste when you could just buy more 45's. If you're using horse stall mats or heavy padding, you can get away with deadlifting with steel plates, but not dropping them from a power clean or snatch.
